Any safe storage places in Fort Dawnguard or Volkihar castle

Post » Sun Nov 18, 2012 4:43 am

Just wondering if I could store things in either place, if I don't have a house yet...

Otherwise it's best not to risk it.

Forget Fort Dawnguard, it's totally unsafe. Castle Volkihar has same safe areas. Check UESP.

As far as my testing goes, all book cages on the first floor of Caste Valkihar are all save storage containers. Just remove the books first . Haven't seen them spawning.

I know I read about a guy losing all of his stuff in one of the DLC bases including his bow and nightingale armor and a few other items that were unique.

So I wouldn't risk it.

I heard Fort Dawnguard isn't safe but Castle Volikar is. I haven't had any issues with it.

So which is it? Dawnguard Fort or Vampire Lord castle is safe/unsafe?

Furniture, that is not owned, should be safe. It was a chest in the Dawngaurd Castle that lost some items, and chests are not ever safe to put things in (outside of your owned homes)

I made a thread awhile back that answers all of this.

http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1390220-heres-the-truth-about-storage-in-castle-volkihar/page__fromsearch__1

Or just click the spoiler tag.

Spoiler
Since there was no solid information on this and the wiki still isn't updated, I decided to take it into my own hands and do some tests. Keep in mind, this is after I beat the mainquest of Dawnguard with the Vampire Faction and supposedly "own" Castle Volkihar. I also waited 11 days each time just to make sure. Heres a list of things I found out:

1. You can safely store all your items in ANY container in Castle Volkihar

2. Containers, Bookcases (the ones you need to actually open), Wardrobes, Chests (including the one in the room with the blood fountain), basically any container you have to actually open and a menu pops up, DO NOT RESPAWN, so go ahead and use them to store items, I suggest removing all the clutter of fine clothes and random books inside of them first though.

3. The display cases DO RESPAWN unfortunatly but whatever item you put in before still stays after it respawns, it'll just respawn ontop of your item

Note: If you unlock them, when it respawns they will become locked again

4. The weapon plaques and weapon racks DO respawn, BUT, only in the slot where it already came with a weapon, the empty slots dont respawn and you can use them freely. This includes all weapon racks (Blacksmith room, Coffin room, Harkons room, etc.)

Note: If you place a weapon in one of the slots that already had a weapon, it'll respawn ontop of your weapon, you can still take your item back though.

5. Anything you drop in the castle floor does NOT dissapear, so go ahead and throw skulls and hearts everywhere if you want for decoration

Note: If you drop an armor or weapon, you might be approached by someone in the castle if they can keep it or not, simply say no and the item will not be taken

6. The ONLY things that respawn are the massive amounts of goblets, blood potions, torture tools, plates, alchemical ingrediants, etc. laying around all over the castle tables, so if you accidentally used Fus Roh Dah and made a mess, dont worry it'll fix itself.

Hope you guys found this useful! It took quite a bit of work organizing it and finding out what works and doesn't.

find some junk and place it in the store area you want then leave the area and wait about a week in-game (or go and do qeusting and such) if it's still there when you get back it's safe :)

although like CCNA said chests are never safe but they do respawn with loot for you! :D

One that worked great for me as a dead drop was Lod's House just up the road from Rorikstead. It's the house with the skeevers and a dead body on the bed. The chest and night stand are completely safe, but the bags are not. In time the skeevers will respawn, but again, the chest is safe :)

I remember in Oblivion my brother use to store his s**t on the docks part of Imperial City, in a barrel by the road.

In Skyrim you can just give it your follower so you shouldn't really need these storage's much.

True, unless you're accumulating a lot of stuff. Your followers can only carry so much. Or if you're flying solo. Then you'd need a safe dead-drop, a place where you could store things and not worry about the container resetting on you (thus loosing everything you kept within that container).

A rule of thumb I go by: Avoid using sacks and barrels. Always use chests. Wardrobes and nightstands are questionable.

Unless of course its within a house you own, then do whatever you like...but even then I'd only utilize the sacks and barrels for things I wouldn't mind loosing (like ingredients, food, potions, clutter) just in case those containers reset some how. To be honest, I'm not sure how warranted that concern is, within your own home, but  better to be cautious than loose 20 dragon bones and scales.

You could simply drop the heaviest biggest items when your follower can not carry any more.
If you tell them to pick them up then they will pick up the items and the items are safely stored on them.

The load they can carry is probably massive but stick to under a reasonable number so the game doesn't crash or something, personally I would not go over 2000.

Huh! Interesting, thanks for the tip! :)

The only things that reset in the main part of Castle Castle Volikar are the display cases, and objects actually sitting on things out in the open, the weapon racks are all safe. Nothing in Fort Dawnguard seemed safe to me, but if the weapon rack in the player quarters refuse to give you your stuff back, try up higher, above the weapons and you might get to snatch them back.
