Vampire attacks on Towns : V

When do these start? Do I have to do the first DG quest (Find out what the Vampires are upto) or do they happen randomly once I join the DG?

they start sometime after you install dawngaurd

from Castle Volkihar. My Orc never had a town attack, just the guards constantly repeating, "Hord thor roforming the Dorngord..."

Yeah this happened to me, the Dawnguard questline will either start with

a Vampire attack and a recruiter trying to get you to join or a Guard telling you about the Dawnguard.

This might be different then Dawnguard is first installed. However if you start an new game after it's installed you will not get any attack unless you visit the Dawnguard castle. It might be an later trigger point, some says returning Serena home is an trigger. However just stay away from the quest and you get no attacks.
It also looks to me that the town attacks follows the same patterns as dragons. If you fast travel a lot you tend to get more town attacks.

I don't believe that's true though unless they changed it in a recent patch. One way to start it may be to go to Dawnguard Castle, but I believe they will start attacking regardless once you reach level 10.

Well I started a new game for DG and I was approached by a recruiter, the Orc. Just wondering when they start as I am RPing a vampire hunter with a grudge.

I have not visit the Dawnguard castle yet, but have vampire attacks in towns and on the roads and this is a new game after Dawnguard was installed.

Being level 8 or above is the trigger to vampire attacks it towns apparently or so it was reported in the numerous threads about Vamp attacks when DG came out, .

My current character (level 40'ish now) who started with DG installed didn't get his first until around level 35...haven't had one since, except I've had a couple of cases where I sleep overnight in a tavern, walk outside in the morning only to find a body somewhere...alas, poor Svern, at least it sorted out the Camilla problem though.
