What do you mean?

What I mean is...
Spoiler
Most Faction Leader-Class NPC's tend to die at some point in their story, in which Isran is an exception.

All Guild and Faction leaders have a high mortality rate. Only a small handful stay alive. Ulfric or Tullius, Arngeir, Delphine and now Israns are the only ones to survive. If i remember correctly that is.

Also the Bard College head survives, but that's hardly a guild.

This has been a favourite of Bethesda for some time:

Oblivion had the fewest: Hannibal Traven, Lucien.

Morrowind: Fighter's Guild head, (potentially) Mage's Guild head, (potentially) Morag Tong head, Telvanni head, Redoran head, Imperial Legion head/champion.

What? You can't do three missions and be named the new leader? That is so unlike Bethesda. What were they thinking!

ps - I guess I did kill Astrid, but she was rather crispy when I found her...

It's a welcome relief. The death of the guild leader has become too predictable in TES. I hope they don't keep killing off the main guild leaders in the next game. A better design would be for a guild to be run by a council, which you join at the end of the questline.

That would still probably end up with a death - One councillor would have to be removed to let you in.

I'd rather not be the leader of any of them. If you think about it just becoming a leader of any faction would really mean your adventuring days are over. You would spend the rest of your days sitting in the factions base, working on balancing the budget, recruiting new members, handling escalated issues as they come up. You would not be running off to fight dragons or join other factions to lead them also. I think it's great to join some factions, work your way up a bit in the rankings (like MW), but that is really all an adventurer would have time to do. Thinking you have to be leader of everything is beyond ridiculous.

If you think about it in practice

- Tolfdir really runs the show (administrative side) as Master Mage
- Night Mother issues the order, you are the "privileged" lackey
- Brynolf seems to do all the behind scene stuff in the Thief's Guild
- The Companion's Harbinger is not really a leadership role

Absolutely, Bethesda kills/gets rid of faction leaders like South Park kills Kenny.

It actually shocked the hell out of me. During every mission I was expecting to see this guy get killed. Even after we killed Harkon I was expecting some debris to fall on him or something.

Which is why he isn't included in the list of privileged few survivors.
