You have no option, he dies every way.

On topic, when you shoot the sun out, is it permanent? or a 24hr period?

When i shot the sun, i saved and started my other character on the dawnguard so idk if it stays that way. I would assume so, but since you get more than one blood arrow and can get more...

The animation for blotting out the Sun was extremely well done. Very smooth and fluid, like liquidy fluid. The 24 hours of darkness that followed also looked pretty awesome.

When shot with the bloodstained arrow, the sun will become darkened for the remainder of the day. The next day the sun will be back to nomal.
