Companions make stealth useless?

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 11:17 am

As a thief I have to avoid doing any qeusts that involve grouping with companion as it will make stealth and also shadow warrior perk completely useless. I'm really surprised why there isn't allready a mod for this. Is it something simple, something maybe I can learn to do with tutorials? I have made around 5 different Thief archtypes, and with all of them I have avoided so many qeusts including the main story wich revolved too much grouping. I never had this issue with Oblivion, I don't see why it should be different with Skyrim. Companions are very much useless anyway.

Correct.

All true thieves and assassins know that it's better to work alone.

Can't trust a partner.

My Nord is mostly a warrior who does some sneaking and it is annoying when a follower rushes ahead into battle and alerts the opposition, pushes my character who's sneaking and gets in the way of my attacks. I prefer to not use followers and I hate quests that require you to have them. For me, followers seem to get in the way more than they help.

I had a follower for a while but he just kept getting me detected. They are the worst for stealthy types.

My Thief doesn't even trust himself... why doesnt THAT break my stealth? :P
Nah seriously, I don't care about companions, but at least in Oblivion you could play all qeusts solo. This is not the case with Skyrim.

Well I have avoided too many qeusts (including main storyline). I would like to them on my thief characters, but was hoping for a good mod fix to solve this issue. We shouldn't hate doing qeusts just because Beth decided it would be funny to frustrate stealth players LOL xD

Many of those quests, I can't help but think of how much easier they'd be if my required follower wasn't around, or if I could get them to keep their distance and just use a bow. It's the fact that followers act on their own that makes them so unpredictable and inconvenient. I wish that Skyrim had some kind of "Dragon Age tactics system" for the followers.

Can I suggest a technique to those who wish to use stealth but feel that followers ruin it.

What I do is tell the follower to stay put -- usually just around the corner or in the adjacent room -- and then go into the target area alone. Once detected, or in dire straights, I retreat back to the follower who will launch straight into their attack protocols and do their job. They will even charge off after a threat under a wait command, but they must have come under threat for their behaviour to change.

This works well enough for me, and has the added benefit of allowing the PC to do most of the work, while the follower is there just for back-up. Just remember that after the action is over the follower will go back into wait mode so don't forget to tell them to follow again.

My thief character used a follower (her husband) for straightforward dungeon crawls--like practically the entire TG main quest--but left him home for more sneaky-type heist jobs. It worked well enough for me.
