Modeling for Skyrim

Post » Mon Nov 19, 2012 7:48 pm

I was looking at Tamriel's map, and considered modeling a few High Rock (British-themed) buildings, as a modder's resource, in hopes of someone stepping up and begin working with me on a fraction of High Rock's landscape (my eyes are fixed on Farrun at the moment).
So, apart from the neccessary lore hunt, to create the area as accurately as possible, I was unsuccessful in finding a tutorial that would outline the proper way of modeling such large statics as houses, or fortifications, for TES import.
I remember Morrowind and Oblivion having trouble with pieces, whose dimensions were not multiples of 8 (16, 32, 512, 2048 etc). I don't know what size units to use inside 3ds max, nor what the optimal size for texture maps is. I'm sure there's a crowd of tips on correct asset creation.
I'm not looking to avoid experimentation, in fact I'm all for it, but small bits of info like these would give me a nice headstart and less of a headache. If anyone knows of any related tutorials, or has experience on the field, please do contact me. :)

Import an actor into 3ds max, this you can use as scale unit for building your house, as textures i would start with power of two 2048x2048, you can scale them down later if needed ...

Edit: Im working on my own custom houses:

Got a little crazy with NifSkope and BSAOpt, but I'm very happy to say it's working perfect. I like that building a lot, my only objection being that it looks too symmetrical. I've been looking at these for inspiration, they might interest you as well: http://paizo.com/store/byCompany/d/daveGraffamModels/paperModelsTerrain/fantasy
I think that guy has some seriously interesting ideas concerning forms and colors.
