When Do Werewolves Show Up?

Post » Wed Nov 21, 2012 11:31 am

Started a new character who hasn't started either the Companions quest or the Dawnguard quest, 40 hours in and no werewolf sightings BUT he did have a run in with 3 wild gargoyles . It was a pair of Gargoyle brutes and a Sentinel gargoyle, IT...WAS...AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Might just be one of the hardest encounters I've had my entire time playing the game. The three of them circled me and made their move, first they would attack one on one coming from 3 different directions then they would switch to a group effort where all three would attack at the same time. I'm not a big fan of the shouts, I hardly ever use them aside from Dragonrend and Clear skies but I must have used Unrelenting force a half dozen or more time trying to keep them at bay when attacking at once. The fight lasted for about an hour in game, it started around 10pm and ended close to 11:30pm (give or take a half hour).
They would each take turns charging at me for an attack coming from every direction, then would circle around me once or twice and then attack at one. It was the same two attacks but in different orders, some times it would be a volley of them taking turns at me then they would switch to a group attack unexpectedly, there was next to no pattern to their attacks which made it rather difficult to predict the next move. IT WAS AWESOME, all I need now is to have a run in with a pack of werewolves Hopefully they pose more of a threat then the gargoyles, ....... I'm a svcker for punishment.

That sounds Epic. :D Gargoyles are the things I never see. I had forgotten they could even occur in random encounters when a couple jumped me and I was "What the Hell IS that!!!???" Took me a while before I realised what they were. :P

Oh damn! I haven't met those guys in the wild yet. That's epic indeed.

Having fought the DG gargolyes though, I'd say the werewolves are a bit tougher to deal with. If it's just one or 2, it's ok. But MF'ing six is INSANE.

I think I can confirm the theory that you need to start the Companions quest line in order for werewolves to start spawning on the map. My newest play through the one that I described above your post has been chugging along at around 40 hours without starting the Companions quest. Last night I started the Companions and guess what..... By the time I had started the second main quest for the Companions I bumped into the farmer who kills his wife and turns into a werewolf, so 40ish hours of game play without a sign that there's werewolves out in the wild and once I sit down and do about 2-3 hours of questing for the Companions I have an encounter.

Now it could be just dumb luck that I have a werewolf encounter after starting the Companions but I'm leaning more towards the idea that you need to have the Companions started in order to have wild werewolves.

That happened to another poster as well. Hmm, the plot thickens.

Ok with what we know, we can go with this:

Before Dawnguard, there were no wild werewolves(not counting the prisoners), as from the many people who have completed the entire companion questline, no one has mentioned seeing them, infact people have asked why there wasn't any.

In Dawnguard, these appear for people who have either completed it, or currently doing the companions questline(in my case, I stopped right after I got the ability to transform).

So, Dawnguard adds these with the requisite being that you join the companions. Sounds good to me.

It does make sense when you think about it

Haha, none of my saves are corrupt either, but that message came up cause once again in panic state I was mashing what I thought was printscreen >>.

I was jumping off a high cliff when these guys spawned right below me @_@

And for the curious I use a Daedric Crossbow mod.
