http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind
The first known civilization to inhabit Morrowind were the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer (during this time the province was known as Dwemereth). Sometimes called "Dwarves" by the ignorant peoples of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer were the remnants of the early http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Aldmer who had settled the coasts, and developed a highly sophisticated and technological culture deep within the mountainous regions of Morrowind, near Spoons, where the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ghostgate currently resides.
The rule of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer in Morrowind was contested by another group of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mer, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer were, like the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer, descendants of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Aldmer, and had followed their prophet http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Veloth across http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Cyrodiil from the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Summerset_Isles for their exodus; and the following of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Veloth http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedric teachings. Soon they abandoned nomadic life and turned to settlement-based areas. During and after the slave revolt of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nords, they set up http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer Strongholds across the Morrowind Frontiers to control and protect the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer Borders from Tribal http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nord attacks, and skirmishes made by other http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer as well. It also has a bad history for the slavery that happened concerning the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Argonians and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Khajiit.
For much time after that, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer inhabited the land of Morrowind, occupying mainly http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vvardenfell until the recent eruption of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain where they were forced from their home after the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Argonians saw an opportunity to attack the land and claim it for themselves. Most of Morrowind was destroyed but, despite this, many http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer have returned to start rebuilding their land and empire. More information is held in Morrowind's end in the Fourth Era below.
Protecting territories and the forming of the Great Houseshttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=2
Disputes over territory marked the early interactions between the two groups of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mer. These battles were fueled by the conflicting religious beliefs of the two cultures. While the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer were an agnostic people, preferring reason to faith, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer were staunch http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Deadra-worshipers, and considered the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer lack of belief an affront to their gods.
It was not until http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nordic invasions of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/First_Era that the two groups of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mer were able to achieve peace. An alliance led by http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Indoril_Nerevar of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/King_Dumac of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer was successful in routing the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nords from the land, lastly at http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain, whereafter the land-place of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Hammerfell was established by the throw of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Volendrung and also creating the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/First_Council. This led to the making of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_Houses, but ultimately made more confliction against Morrowind's Regions in their entirety.
The cultural differences between the two groups were too great to allow for a lasting peace. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/The_War_of_the_First_Council culminated at the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer fortress of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain, although accounts of the final hours of the war varied.
The Battle at Red Mountain and Azura's Cursehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=3
It is supposed that http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nerevar was slain during or shortly after the battle, although it was during the summoning of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura by http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nerevar http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal, which included http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Veloth (who was not officially in it, but aided in http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura summoning), http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_the_Poet, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sotha_Sil, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Almalexia. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/King_Dumac and all of his http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemer brethren were killed, but the exact manner of their extinction is still debated. Nor did the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer leave the battle of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain unchanged as stated in the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer page. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura laid her curse upon the already-exiled http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer. The supposed murder of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Indoril_Nerevar by the summoning ritual made by the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura appeared, with http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Indoril_Nerevar dead, and her words hissed: "May the eyes of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Changed_Ones be turned as red as this volcanic ash, and may their skin be as blackened as their hearts. The accursed drawn, blood from the master spilled, and a curse shown in the race of these folk, forever-more." This led to the hiding of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_the_Poet in thehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ministry_of_Truth and the recession of the cultures of the now accursed http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura withdrew from the mountain, and there upon the now-http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer lay with ashen souls, and would reflect change in the Eras to come.
Perhaps the most important consequences of the battle were the changes effected in http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Indoril_Nerevar closest advisors. His trusted http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal - http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Almalexia, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sotha_Sil, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_the_Poet - were found to have attained great, even god-like, power. His general, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dagoth_Ur, originally thought to be killed at http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain, was later found to have attained similar degree of power. These four former mortal individuals were to become seen as symbols, champions, gods, and villains, sometimes revered and sometimes despised. The four, until recent years, exercised great influence over the development of the nation of Morrowind.
While most of the local governance of the province continued through the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_Houses, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal ruled the land indirectly through their http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple, and inspired the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer with their statues as Living Gods. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedra worship that the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer espoused was considered nothing more than a prelude to the new spiritual awakening of the land. Their powers were tested as they joined with the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Reman_Dynasty to defend the land from the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Akaviri.
A New Era and a New Threathttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=4
Though victorious, Morrowind's relationship with the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Cyrodilic_Empire did not remain cordial, and after steadily growing mistrust, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/The_Four_Score_War erupted in the 2840th year of thehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/First_Era. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_the_Poet in particular, demonstrated enormous power and leadership in battle after battle, yet neither side advanced for almost eighty years. In the end, it was the diplomatic skills of the Three that ended the war. Whatever the extent of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal power, and how much fancy has been woven into their legend, there can be no doubt of their diplomatic prowess. While other provinces flailed in the chaos of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Second_Era, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal kept the disparate http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Houses_of_Morrowind in check, and repelled yet another invasion from http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Akavir.
The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal diplomatic skills were put to the test yet again at the end of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Second_Era, when they were faced with the external threat of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tiber_Septim rising http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire, as well as the internal threat posed when http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dagoth_Ur, after long slumbering, arose to take back his fortress of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tiber_Septim, not eager to fight three http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal and also worried about http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dagoth_Ur return, agreed to a treaty, as described in the history section of this book. The treaty gave Morrowind autonomy and gave the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Septim_Empire the means to conquer the rest of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel: an equitable solution for both parties involved.
A further concession was given to http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tiber_Septim demand for a central authority in Morrowind: a ruler who could be his hand in the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Barenziah, daughter of the ruling family of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mournhold, was the first to be given the title of Queen of Morrowind. The title was largely ceremonial, but the young Queen and her consort, Tiber Septim's general http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Symmachus, proved to be extremely popular with the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer people.
Morrowind's destruction during the Fourth Erahttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=5
The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Arnesian_War was one of the many during the troubled time of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial_Simulacrum of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Jagar_Tharn. What started as a simple slave revolt in the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Dres lands of the south built on itself until the swampy plains erupted with blood and fire, pitting Morrowind against http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Marsh. During the chaos, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Symmachus was slain, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Barenziah, rightly fearing for her life, fled across the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire to the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/High_Rock kingdom of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Wayrest. The Queen abdicated her throne, leaving it to her uncle http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Athyn_Llethan, a http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Hlaalu noble.
The uneasy truce between Temple, King, and House was beginning to crumble. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dagoth_Ur was ascending, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal was collapsing, but, according to current popular rumor, a miracle occurred. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Indoril_Nerevar was reborn and returned to Morrowind to set things to right, but it was only supposed, just as much as the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nerevarine traveled to http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Akavir. No one really knew what happened. By the time the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ministry_of_Truth collapsed in the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Fourth_Era, Morrowind was open for sacking. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Argonians saw the opportunity and took southern Morrowind. Years after, some of the Dunmer began returning to rebuild their homeland. Morrowind was wartorn and Black Marsh took total control of Morrowind.
Geographyhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=6
Once a part of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/First_Empire of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nord, Morrowind is now the land of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer, commonly known as "Dark Elves", whose origins involve a dark secret and a curse set upon them by Azura after the events of the Nord uprising. Savage and proud, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer shun all contact with the outside world, even with their brethren from http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Valenwood and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Summerset_Isles. The common traveler, upon crossing http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Shadowgate_Pass?action=edit&redlink=1, may be forgiven for believing that he has left http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel and entered a different world. The sky is darkened regularly by furious ash storms belched forth from the mighty Red Mountain, a volcano. The familiar flora and fauna of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel is exchanged for bizarre and twisted forms that can survive the regular ashfall. Cloaked and masked http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer tend herds of giant insects. A courier clatters by on the back of a 20-foot-tall, crablike creature. Everywhere, cowering slaves - http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Argonian, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Khajiit - scurry to carry out the barked commands of their http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer masters.
Located in the north-east of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel, much of the landscape is as twisted and mountainous as its neighbor http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Skyrim, but it is a hot, desolate land, even far from http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vvardenfell and its famous volcano, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain. Previously named Resdayn,http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-0Veloth,http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-1 Dwemereth,http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-2 and Dunmereth,http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-3http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-4 it was home to the mysterious, lost Elven tribe called the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dwemerhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-5 and their cousins, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Chimer of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Summerset_Isles,http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-6 who became the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer of today. For the last two Eras, it has been called "Morrowind".http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind#cite_note-7
Dunmerhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=7
The grey-skinned red-eyed Dark Elves seem admirably suited to their strange, ash-blighted region. They are known as the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer in the Elven tongue, and now populate the great stretch of northeastern http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel between the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Velothi_Mountains and the sea, and between the southern edge of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Deshaan_Plains and the northern coast. But from whence these unusual people came, what was their race and lineage, or where their original home, ere they spread themselves over Morrowind and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Deshaan?action=edit&redlink=1, are questions easier asked than answered. The Dark Elves must have split from the original trunk of the Elven race many long eons ago, for although unquestionably kin to the other http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Elves of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tamriel, the Dark Elves differ in many ways, not least in their striking appearance. His ash-grey skin and glowing red eyes makes a Dark Elf instantly recognizable, although few have seen one, as they rarely leave their homeland. Like all elves, they tend to be tall and gaunt, but the Dark Elves take the Elvish haughtiness to an extreme, viewing humans as no better than beasts, fit only to serve as slaves on the plantations of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tear.
They consider themselves superior even to other Elves, who in their estimation are effete and decadent specimens of the pure Elven race. The earliest human records bearing on the subject (which must remain our best source until the archives of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Altmer are opened to http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial scholars) are the chronicles of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nords. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nords gave to the region the name of Dunmereth from being the land of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer; but in earlier ages it was called by themselves Resdayn; andhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial Librarian http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Elba_Laskee?action=edit&redlink=1 traces the foundation of the Dark Elven nation back to above 3,500 years from the present time. Morrowind was not given its modern name until after the first eruption of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vvardenfell.
Religionhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=8
The Tribunal templehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=9
The strange heathen religion of the House Dark Elves deserves special note. They worship three gods known as "the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal", and believe these gods walk the earth and rule Morrowind directly. To an outsider, the priesthood of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal seems to be the true power in Morrowind. Each Tribune, who go by the names of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Almalexia, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sotha_Sil, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_the_Poet, has an eponymous city dedicated to its worship, and a palace/temple within each city where the god supposedly resides. The priests of thehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple are omnipotent in Morrowind; strange processions of fantastically garbed priests roam the land, selecting new candidates to serve the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal, who are seized without resistance and never seen again.
Only the highest of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal priests, or persons of spiritual greatness chosen by a http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal themselves, come into contact with these revered figures. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal temples are in every native Morrowind city, generally in circular shaped buildings, and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal religion is often referred to as just the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple is spread to all http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_Houses and is the religion practiced by all native http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer, excluding the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ashlanders which the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple looks down upon.
Worshipers must go on a quest to many pilgrimages to become full, respected members of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple, many of these involving offerings to shrines. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer saints of the religion are worshiped at three-sided shrines which offer healing and blessings to the followers with the proper offerings as necessary. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple has strict rules and is a formidable power in Morrowind, and it is dangerous to attack it in anyway, verbally or physically. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple makes strong campaigns against http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vampires, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Deadra worship, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Necromancy, and is at all times trying to diminish their numbers.
Each god is a distinct figure to temple members. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_the_Poet is known for his generosity and skill in battle, and a patron for rogues and artists. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Almalexia is known for her kindness and healing nature. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sotha_Sil is best known for his skill in wizardry and mechanics. A book series has been written about the events of these gods and is called http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/2920,_The_Last_Year_of_the_First_Era and also a book in a religious series entitled http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/36_Lessons_of_Vivec. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal has allied with three http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Deadra lords (http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mephala, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Boethiah) who are referred to as the "anticipations".
Daedra worshiphttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=10
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedra worship, or the Daedra cult, is thought of as the antithesis of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal. The religion is comprised of members who serve and worship divine figures known as "http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedric_Princes" or "Daedra Lords". Outsiders, particularly http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal or http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nine_Divines worshippers, generally viewhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedra cultists as barbaric and sinister, which is in part justified by many hostile groups. People of all races are known to worship http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedra.
Hostility from http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Human http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedra worshippers is directly related to the cruel nature of the Daedra Lords. Recognizable Daedra Lords include: http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mephala, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Azura, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Boethiah, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Clavicus_Vile, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nocturnal, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vaermina, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sheogorath, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mehrunes_Dagon, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Malacath, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Molag_Bal. Daedric Lords in Morrowind are worshiped at giant, easily recognizable citadels that are dedicated to specific Lords. A http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daedroth is a demon-like creature that serves a Daedra Lord; they come in many forms and are immortal, to a degree.
The Ashlandershttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=11
Thehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ashlanders beliefs are very different from other religions in Morrowind. They believe in an ancient prophecy involving the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Nerevarine, that is meant to save the nativehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer from outlanders, or the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple them to be savages and kill anyone who would claim to be part of the prophecy.
Local politicshttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=12
The politics of the province of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire is controlled by five clans, known as the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_Houses. They entirely control the politics and trade in Morrowind. In the past there were six houses. Each major clan is allied with numerous sub-clans, the alignment of which is more or less permanent, although it is not unheard of for a subclan to switch allegiances. In former times, the clans carried out their feuding with open warfare. This was forbidden under the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal, but the clans still engage in bloody infighting through the unique institution of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morag_Tong, the sanctioned guild of assassins. Clans routinely hire the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morag_Tong to eliminate their enemies, and the assassins of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morag_Tong may kill their assigned "marks" with impunity, as long as they conform to the obscure (but strict) rules of their guild. Such an arrangement strikes the citizen of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire as an outlandish barbarism, but, as with much in benighted Morrowind, seems well-suited to the savage temperament of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer.
House Indorilhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=13
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Indoril claims kinship with all three of the legendary http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal, which doubtless accounts for http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Indoril preeminence among the five clans. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Indoril capital is http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Almalexia, also the capital of Morrowind itself, and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tribunal_Temple priesthood (which is one and the same as the bureaucracy of civil government) is dominated by the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Indoril and their subclans.
House Hlaaluhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=14
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Hlaalu is the smallest and weakest of the five clans, clinging to http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_House status in their ancient capital of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Narsis. Traditional enemies of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Indoril, who have controlled the levers of government for 3,000 years, the continued resilience of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Hlaalu must inspire a certain respect. Merchants and traders in a land that despises outsiders, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Hlaalu nevertheless maintain a limited commerce with the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire, trading stout http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial broadcloth and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Cyrodilic brandy for the elegant trinkets produced by the admittedly skilled craftsmen of Morrowind.
House Redoranhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=15
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Redoran guards the western flank of Morrowind, and are known as the best warriors among the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer. Each warrior of the house is sworn to a strict code of honor as to maintain the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Redoran warrior reputation. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Redoran towns and strongholds generally have distinctive buildings made from the shells of large crab-like giants.
House Telvannihttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=16
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Telvanni is the most xenophobic of a xenophobic race, shunning all contact with outsiders, preferring to tend their herds of giant insects amid the rocky hills and islands of the extreme northeast. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Telvanni_Bug_Musk is a highly prized perfume among the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer, and their riding-insects command the highest prices in the markets of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Almalexia_(City) and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Narsis. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Telvanni is controlled by a high council of wizard-lords. Each Lord has domain over his or her own stronghold, which is usually the center of a small town of which they also rule. Wizard-Lords are often extremely powerful http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer wizards, often reigning for hundreds, or even thousands of years. http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Telvanni towns are often distinguished by their towers which are entirely organic structures that are literally grown as plants. These towers often house the wizard-lords and their subjects who live nearby. The otherhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer clans give the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Telvanni the worst reputation, mostly because they choose to stay out of struggles among houses and remain isolated, only caring for their own.
House Dreshttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=17
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Dres rules the southern sweep of Morrowind, where the fertile http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Deshaan_Plains merges with the swamps of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Marsh. The http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Dres are the great slave-traders and plantation owners of Morrowind. Thousands of wretched captives, mainly http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Argonians but including not a few http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Khajiits and even http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial citizens, pass through the infamous slave-pens of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tear, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/House_Dres capital, from whence most find an early death on the plantations which surround that ill-omened city.
Militaryhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=18
http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer warriors favor a wonderfully light armor made from the carapace of insects, covered over with a finely-woven cloak of spider silk, wrapped several times around the torso. A turban protects the head and face from the ubiquitous ash, with goggles of transparent resin; loose trousers and high boots completes the dress. While this makes for an outlandish appearance, the traveler will understand the utility of these garments the first time he is caught out of doors in one of the frequent ash storms without such protection. When indoors, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer shed these outer coverings, and luxuriate in a variety of richly-colored fabrics; sashes decorated with clan symbols are common, while cumbersome ceremonial costumes made from various parts of giant insects are the glory of those of the highest rank. It is also argued by Historians and Scholars, that aside from http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Cyrodiil, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer nation of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Resdayn, was the most powerful province, in terms of military might, yet political division has always prevented this from being utilized effectively. Only during invasion has Morrowind stood united, and even when the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire threatened it with war, it was divided as to how to conduct it's defence.
Culturehttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=19
Three major cultural groupings have settled Morrowind, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_House group, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ashlander, and the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial. The smallest settlements are the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ashlander nomadic camps, compromised of small, portable huts. Recent http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial colonies like http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Pelagiad display the same half timbered homes and stone castles as might be found in http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Daggerfall or any other Western province. But the dominant culture is the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_House culture.
Populationhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=20
On the Isle of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vvardenfell, which was only recently opened to settlement and trade, most of the island's population is confined to the relatively hospitable west and southwest coast, centered on the ancient city of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vivec_(City) and the old http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_House district centers at http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Balmora, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ald%27ruhn, and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Sadrith_Mora. The rest of the island is covered by hostile desert wastes, arid grasslands, and volcanic badlands, and thinly populated by the nomadic http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Ashlander tribes.
On the Mainland, the Population is more evenly spread across the Province, with major cities such as http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Mournhold, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Tear, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Narsis, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Necrom, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Port_Telvannis, http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Blacklight and http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Silgrad_Tower holding very large portions of the Province's residents.
Economyhttp://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Morrowind?action=edit§ion=21
Morrowind was formerly an agrarian aristocracy, mostly free farmers and herders and fishermen ruled by http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Great_Houses and their noble councils. But since the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Imperial occupation, and especially on http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Vvardenfell, the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dunmer have developed a mercantile economy on the model of the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Empire, ruled by the http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Emperor, law, and legions, but driven by trade in crafts and goods. Morrowind's production is based on the mining of http://morrowind.wikia.com/wiki/Kwama_Eggs , http://morrowind.wikia.com/wiki/Ebony_(Raw), and http://morrowind.wikia.com/wiki/Raw_Glass. Morrowind is considered to have vast supplies of these rare resources beneath http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain, yet these had been barely tapped until the recent defeat of http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Dagoth_Ur, which opened http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Red_Mountain up to expansion in the mining industry.
