AddOnNode indices

From http://www.gamesas.com/topic/1406324-changing-the-colour-pf-spell-effects/page__view__findpost__p__21509281 post it seems that something may have changed recently in the CK, as I'm having no difficulty with setting up a new AddOnNode with an arbitrary index (300, in my test case), just by typing in the index in the AddOnNode edit window and making sure the name and value of the BSValueNode in my .nif match the index (the name may be irrelevant, I'm not sure).

Can anyone confirm something's changed, or have I misunderstood Saidenstorm's post?

If something has changed, and we can now (easily) choose AddOnNode indices that won't conflict with other mods, are there any ranges already in heavy use that should be avoided? And is there anywhere that modders can note which ranges they're using?
