Releasing Dragonborn after Christmas

Post » Tue Dec 04, 2012 8:58 am

Do you think releasing Dragonborn to everyone apart from Xbox after Christmas will cost them sales?

This is me asking your view points because I was rather shocked at the idea of doing this considering Christmas is generally considered a prime shopping/sales time for gaming as well as many other industries. Followed by a decrease in sales due to well Christmas costing way to much.

Anyways figures will probably show up next year but right now its anybody’s guess.

I rather expect that Bethesda has done held back for PC / Xbox for some particular reason as its not there first time but I am yet to understand that. So please don’t consider this a post questioning why Xbox gets released before anybody else.

They have a product loads of people want. They could sell it in the middle of June and people would still buy it.

I am completely sure they will buy it, I certainly will. But I am curious about peoples thoughts on will it make sales better or worse.
Personally my guess is it will result in slower sales, although overall maybe not less sales.

I don't think they have a choice in the matter. All Skyrim DLC is under the thirty days exclusivity contract AFAIK. To violate that in any way would result in a massive lawsuit, and no one in the right mind would want Microsoft coming after them with a lawsuit.

And no, I don't think releasing the PC and PS3 versions after Christmas will affect sales too much, at least not in a negative way. They might have ended up with somewhat higher sales if they did release before Christmas, but again, Bethesda's not allowed to release the versions for the other platforms until after the thirty days are up.

That explains the early xbox release. (Learnt something new thanks.)

I doubt that's the case. For Dawnguard and Hearthfire Bethesda never even acknowledged that they would be released on other platforms before the exclusivity period is up. They've announced this will be coming out on the PC and PS3 before it's even hit market for the 360. To me, that suggests that the exclusivity deal is done, and they're just releasing the one finished version of the DLC they've managed to do to capitalize on the holidays.

I'm guessing that's what it is. Besides, I'm not sure if I have ever heard of an exclusivity deal that covers only some of the DLC.

I don't know, it still sounds like some kind of exclusivity deal to me. Maybe not the same one they did before, but still. I don't see how the PC version at least would take another whole month or two longer than the 360 version, even when you do factor in Christmas and everything.

Of course, I think they do take the entire end of December off as well as early January, so there is that. If that's true, PC and PS3 may not get Dragonborn until late January or early February. They did say "early 2013," not "next month."

Either there's still a contract active with Microsoft or Bethesda won't be able to finish the other versions until early next year. One of these two is probably the correct answer.

Yes.. Even releasing it on Christmas day would cost them sales by a bit.. But I think it would be best if Bethesda released it on Christmas or before rather than the path they chose with this DLC..

Why on earth did that not cross my mind, if that is the case I actually feel a little sorry for them I know the feeling of annoying delays a little to well.

If I'm wrong I'm sorry but I'm sure they signed a deal for 3 major dlc with Microsoft, this wont include HF as it was an addon by all accounts so the should still have at least one more dlc after DB

It's the same day the Xbox releases- prior to this there wasn't a peep about PC or PS3. It's the exact same pattern as the other DLCs. People looking for obscure little signs that Bethesda isn't in an exclusivity contract are reading tea leaves.
