What is the Best Method for Merging Mods?

What is the best method to merge items of different mods togther?
i.e. 2 seperate mods each having one record (spell/recipe/weapon), being combined into 1 personal mod with 2 records (spells/recipes/weapons) in it.

I used to use TESVsnip 4.0 to combine the records into one mod. Open the mod in the CK and let it straighten out the IDs, Save and use.

But I heard there were TESVsnip internal clipping issues with compression, and it was best not to use it yet.

As far as I know the CK will not combine mods (unlike Oblivion's would).

Is it possible to use TESVEDIT to combine mods? TESVGECKO? Something else? Manually re-create the record in the CK - (my aching fingers beg for another way)?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.
