Latest Steam Update "Broke" the CK Yet Again

Post » Mon Dec 10, 2012 6:16 am

I've talked to other modders over the past three days who noticed the same issue this week.

Since Steam's latest update, it's not possible to run two instances of the Creation Kit, even *after* changing the line in the INI file to allow for this.

This makes it really difficult to update an older mod, or to compare Mod A with Mod B to see where I went wrong, and so on. It means, basically, you have to load one plug in, find whatever it was you were changing, fixing, or just curious about... Hope like hell you *remember* what you saw.... then load the second plug in, find whatever it was... etc.

Is anyone else having this issue?

More importantly, does anyone know how to fix it?

Unfortunately, "Stay off line on steam" isn't an option, because as Skyrim itself is updated, I need to see the updates to be sure I'm doing things that stay compatible, and, much as I loathe Steam, I have people that I contact through their instant-message chat service.

It was suggested this may have something to do with some multiplayer crap that Steam may be doing, and they've restricted it so people can't "two-box" and thereby gain an "unfair" advantage, but if that's the case, why in the name of Talos's left ... male body part ... would they include things like TOOLS in such a restriction?

(And as a side rant, there ARE only two "tools" in their Tools section. One is the CK, the other is a similar program for another game. Everything else in their so-called Tools is just various game servers. Why they can't separate them so that their server crap doesn't affect things like the CK is beyond me, but it's just more evidence that Steam is a disaster, in my opinion.)

The changes showing in the Steam > Logs > content_log.txt are :

[2012-12-07 14:11:59] AppID 202480 state changed : 0x00000002 = Update Required,
[2012-12-07 14:11:59] AppID 202480 state changed : 0x00000004 = Fully Installed,
[2012-12-07 14:11:59] Converted app content in folder "c:\steam\steamapps\common\skyrim

The AppID is Steam's ID for the CK.

What that change *was* I've no idea. All I know is, it prevents the running of two copies of the program, and gives some Steam "support" site to check out (a site, let me add, that requires yet another account to be created).

I also noted this morning, when trying to work on a mod involving creating new NPCs, that the CK claimed it was missing basically, all body textures, MSNs, Ss, and SKs. And the cute part? I was LOOKING at my file tree, at the Skyrim > Data folder, and those files were right there, unpacked, where they should have been. These files weren't modded files, either, they were the stock files from Skyrim.ESM.

Telling Steam to re-validate both CK and Skyrim resulted in several "failed, will reacquire" issues, too. I asked other modders if they had this problem, and the ones I asked had all experienced this as well, so it wasn't just me, as I thought at first. These may be two separate issues, though.

(And to Bethesda... In all seriousness... Could you please NEVER EVER deal with these people again? I much preferred the "stand alone" of games and modding from Oblivion on back.)
Here's hoping someone can fix this!

See that thread.

On the Tools tab, it is populated based on the games you own via Steam. For instance, I've got the NV version of the GECK, the Source SDK, and some others in mine. Dedicated servers are arguably tools as they're separate services that need to be run.

As for the rest of your Steam rants, take them to the thread in the Community section.
