Of course he mast famous as an astronomer, but some of you may even remember him as the Gamesmaster. This is the guy who inspired me to look up into the heavens and wonder as a child, and had done for so many since the first Sky at Night in 1957. Pipe, monocle, an oddly effusive way of presenting, this man ticked all the boxes marked 'singular'. There was quite simply no one else like him.
Sure, 89 is a damned fine innings, but still the world is a darker place. Rest in peace, may you find your place among the stars.
