Another Turning of the Age: A Poem for 12-12-12

Have a good one friends!

***

This is the way the world ends.
His heart clenches
As he watches the news
Hears the silence of his home
The ethereal texts of his children
The turning pages of his wife’s book
A family together, but separate;
Disconnected.
This is the way the world ends.

This is the way the world begins.
Her fist clenched
As she voices her dissent.
An ocean of bodies, roaring
For justice, for honesty, for inclusivity.
A new family born from the ashes of the old,
Born of hope, a mission
To right every wrong.
This is the way the world begins.

This is the way the world remains.
His mind clenches
As the razor kisses his skin,
A soft crimson line
And the sickly-sweet pain
He can control – brings release
Of fear, of guilt, of shame
Of the hidden wounds within.
This is the way the world remains.

This is the way the world turns
At the turning of every age.
This is the time of distrust
Of the breaking of illusions
Of losing faith in everything.
God grant that we can know our hearts
And the hearts of others.
Teach us to reach out
To temper justice with empathy
To give our despair a voice.
Help us to live kindly
Help us to live gracefully
Help us to live knowingly
Because
This is the way the world turns
At the turning of every age.
