I never rely on restoration, but you could use wards to block in combat magic. Don't know if that levels up fast or not though..

THey say the spell Equilibrium, which heals your magicka for health, and then use a healing spell, and then alternate.

Most natural way to level restoration without training is to get damaged a lot in battle and heal yourself a lot. This is good if you have good amount of health and a good amount of magicka. Fight with a sword or something that doesn't use magicka, to save your magicka for healing. I think your XP gain is the amount of health you heal.

If you are a squishy mage, you can level your restoration by training your ward against a Flame Atronach or a Storm Atronach. Learn to use wards efficiently. I haven't measured this, but I believe your XP gain is the amount of incoming damage you block.

Go to Dragon temples to find alot of draugr and use Turn Undead on them. Remember to use wards!!!
