Should I get my hopes up?

Post » Wed Dec 19, 2012 6:18 am

I'll hopefully get Oblivion and 4200 Microsoft Points(Dawnguard & Dragonborn) for Christmas, but I wonder if I should get even more excited than I am right now? Is Oblivion a good game? I don't care about the graphic so that shouldn't be a problem . And how about DG and DB? Are they worth longing for?
Skyrim is my first Elder Scrolls game and it's clearly my favorite game of all time, that's why I want to play Oblivion! I'm on Xbox 360, btw.

Thanks!

Unless you get Oblivion on PC, I don't think it's anything to write home about. Going from Skyrim to Oblivion is quite a step back, and there's quite a few differences between the two. If you get Oblivion on PC, you can at least upgrade it with all the mods that are out there that make the game a whole lot better... without those, though, I wouldn't bother with Oblivion unless you really want to see the story and such. This is just my opinion, of course. Sorry if that isn't what you wanted to hear. ;)

My experience with Oblivion was fantastic. When you exit the starting area, you see a huge land spread out in front of you. It just feels magical. The music in my opinion trumps some of Skyrims, and yes, the graphics aren't awesome, but to this day I still go into Oblivion, even after sinking hundreds of hours into Skyrim. Yeah. You should get your hopes up.

I loved the game [Oblivion]. I found it much better organized than Skyrim, especially the guilds and the quests and it had much better magicka features and menus/journal. One of the problems with Skyrim is that every time you want to cast a spell, you have to reload your weapon afterwards. As far as I'm concerned, the graphics are phenomenal.

You should definitely get for the experience and plot. You will understand TES better if you play older titles. You could always read lore but it doesn't offer the main plotlines like talking about. I have played since Daggerfall and love TES period. I definitely recommend it dude.

It's no use asking if Oblivion is a good game, only you can answer that by playing it. Reviews only help so much in making a decision, as they can be too enthusiastic and have a tendency to jump on to the bandwagon of hype surrounding big titles these days. Reading forums will only help so much - people love it, hate it, or like it. Everyone will give you a completely different answer, as it is largely subjective; if someone hates it, they'll tell you it's a terrible game, and some people will act like it's a straight-and-out fact and anyone with a different taste is clearly wrong. If someone loves it, they'll tell you it's the best thing since sliced bread, yadda yadda different taste and so on - you get the idea. People can tell you why they love it, and someone else will hate it for that reason, and vice versa.

I think it's interesting to see what other people like (or hate) about it, Kaidonni.

I liked Oblivion.

Good storylines, good gameplay. DLC for it was pretty good as well.

Is it a step back now that we have Skyrim? Sure. But no more than Morrowind was a step back when Oblivion was the most current chapter.

Each game of The Elder Scrolls series is great for what they bring as an individual games, but also for the world that they've helped to create. If you want a better understanding on the world of The Elder Scrolls, then without hesitation I'd suggest playing Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion. Just having played through those games myself as they came out has helped me have a great understanding of a ton of the references that are made in Skyrim.

And this will all continue again when the sixth game is released an unknown number of years from now. It all helps to further and grow this amazing universe that we have been gifted with by Bethesda. :)

Oblivion does have better guilds, and it does feel like the more "finished" game, where Skyrim is more stable, but there was so much left out just to meet the 11/11/11 deadline.

Casting spells will certainly feel different, as they are instantly cast in Oblivion, and you can cast spells while still having a weapon+shield equipped.

Oblivion also has attributes and major/minor skills. Only the ~10 skills you select will level up your character (not all of them, as in Skyrim), and if you want to raise your health, for example, you must raise your block, heavy armor or armorsmith skills, as there is no option to specifically raise health at level up.

If you're curious, give Oblivion a try. In fact, try all of the Elder Scrolls games. You may end up liking Oblivion more than Skyrim.

If you like Skyrim it's worth trying. General advice though (for every game series): Play the previous game first. Otherwise you'll find yourself really annoyed by the new features you're missing out on when you go back.

@ Madae
It is, but I find the wording makes a major difference. If someone asks me if a game is good, I can't answer that for them because it's only going to be good/bad to me. They may end up liking it. Fortunately, people on the forums here expand on what makes them feel the way they do about the games, which is always helpful.

If u don't care for graphics then this game is good. the guilds are a lot bigger and longer (IMO) . If ur getting it for christmas it's not much of a loss if u don't like it. Just understand that it is an older game. ( which there isn't anything wrong with older games)

Thanks for your opinions, guys! And one more question, what do you get in the 5th Anniversary Edition?
