So... why call it Nordic armour?

Post » Thu Dec 20, 2012 4:17 am

So I haven't actually gotten the DLC yet (being a PC user), but am I the only one who finds it odd that we've got armour and weapons in Dragonborn being explicitly called "Nordic"?

In Bloodmoon, yeah, calling it that made sense because we'd just come from Morrowind, where we needed a way of saying "this armour isn't from around here". But in Dragonborn, we've just literally spent the last year playing in Skyrim. A place where everything is Nordic. The distinction comes off as more than a little jarring now.

It's obviously not the same armour that other Nords use, over on the mainland, so why not just call it Skaal armour?

Good point. Not to mention we already have a nordic steel plate and an ancient nord armor, too.

It's of Nordic design where as every other armor's design either of a different origin (e.g elvin or orcish) or just generic. Also Solthseim is a part of Morrowind now so you kinda are in a place separate in culture.

Isn't it called Nordic Carved Armor? Apparently this armor is distinctive in that is carved instead of forged? Then to call it Nordic Carved would be to identify who did the carving?

Just trying to help the poor guy who thought up the name. I could be right, though. ;)

I thought this too and it is kind of odd. It's probably an oversight.

If I had to guess I'd say the "carved" part of the name has to do with the designs carved into it.

I think the name comes from the carvings on it ;)

I don't think there's armor sized pieces of quicksilver being carved into armor shape

I can kinda see where you're coming from, but saying that everything is Nordic in Skyrim simply isn't true. Imperial, Elven, Glass, Ebony, Orcish, Daedric, Dwarven, Falmer, and Forsworn armors/weapons are definitely not of speficially-Nordic origin, off the top of my head. I think the distinction is justified, though I agree that "Skaal Armor" might have worked just as well, if not slightly better.

To be fair, that's exactly the kind of thing Nords would do.

Yeah but is it really of Skaal origin? Perhaps it's just something Beth decided to implement late in the game to give Nords their very own armor? I mean I can hardly see them getting by all this time with just gauntlets and boots.
