I need some input on a character I have made. 2 main points.
His Name is Anton, a Nord Ranger. I have him specialized in stealth and archery. I am not looking for a character to be OP, I always have one companion with me that dual wields a sword and a dagger.
FIRST POINT.
I was thinking, what main Melee weapon should he use. I have a nice 2 handed axe I could use, but I also have a nice 1 handed axe and a 1 handed sword. Typically Rangers would go with a sword as backup but I was thinking would it make sence to be carrying around a 2 handed axe together with a bow?
I mean, you could have the axe in your hand's and the bow on your back but when you need the bow I can not simply sheathe the axe like you could with a sword in your scabbard. A one handed axe could be tucked in your belt like it does in-game, but switching a Large axe with your bow on the back seems weird.
Same goes with shields. I know it has the game mechanic that makes it work just fine, but it is slightly awkward to me. The major question comes down to, can I use a 2-handed weapon with a bow to be realistic as a Ranger? If so, could you explain why?
I have only once made a 2 handed weapon warrior, it was fun. I also love 1 handed weapons.
SECOND POINT.
I know in the real world that Swords was during the earlier ages (pre-y1500) quite uncommon. Ordinary soldier from the Northern countries often used axes and shields as well as spears. Swords were expensive and only the rich or kings used them. Axes was the favorite weapon of war for a long time in Scandinavia, I am trying to make a semi-realistic run here. I know fantasy games should not be restricted by to much realism. But for once I want to be a little restrictive with my new Character. Swords are quite common in Skyrim but I still feel some need to use another weapon, like the axe. Both for it's being a cheap weapon and a ranger is not a rich man and would be more likely to get one of those. Another point being it is more effective to have an axe when you are out in the nature, to be able to cut branches for fire and such.
I may be over-thinking this, but I would really like some thought's from you guys.
