Computer won't turn on, help!

Post » Sat Jan 05, 2013 9:32 am

New desktop build not turning for whatever reason. Power supply makes a clicking noise when I flick the power switch, CPU fan LED comes on, and the CPU fan moves a tiny bit before going silent.

I'm posting this from my tablet since my desktop is out of commission, but basically I tried to upgrade my computer today and now it's not turning back on.

My current hardware specs:

GTX 580
8 gigs ripjaw gskill ram iirc
Intel Core i5 3750k ivy bridge
ASUS P8B75-V motherboard
Corsair AX850 PSU

I checked all the cables, all the cards and such. Everything seems to be connected properly. The system was working just fine before I switched motherboards and replaced my CPU. I should also note that I went from AMD to Intel and didn't format as I'm using the driver trick. Thing is, it's not even booting up at all.

Anyone have any ideas? I'm having Skyrim withdrawls and need my fix as soon as possible...Thanks.

elimination is the key, start with as little as possible to see if there is a part causing your problem.

remove/disconnect everything except the essentials (aka, motherboard, 1 RAm stick and CPU and PSU) and see if you can get it to POST.

If you still cannot get a POST with only the essentials, I'd suggest taking the motherboard out of the case and try booting it off a table, if it works then you have a short somewhere in the cased....if not, then something in your Motherboard/CPU or PSU might be faultly.

The power supply is probably shot.

But that's just a guess. You were smart enough to put the computer together, so exercise some systematic deduction to find and replace the faulty component.

I remember when I was starting my PC for the first time after building it, I didn't put the RAM in well enough. I didn't realize the force that was needed. It wouldn't post and I was freaking out so I started to troubleshoot and started by taking out the RAM and trying to boot it with only one stick. Make sure it's really in there.

Another thing I've heard people doing is not mounting their motherboard properly. Some people were trying to install it directly to the case and not on the standoffs. As da mage said, try booting it off of a table.

Power Supply would be my guess too.

Only thing to try besides getting a new PSU would be to run a bare-bones setup (mobo + CPU + 1 stick of RAM + PSU) just to see if you can get in BIOS.

You do have two connectors from the PSU hooked to the motherboard, right? One should be 24 pin on the same side as the SATA connectors and the other is an 8 pin (I think) up near the cpu.
