Skyrim svcks: day 1

Post » Sun Jan 06, 2013 8:51 pm

Intro

Why I'm doing this? Well it's because Bethesda didn't want to put Fallout: New Vegas on sale during steam's
winter sale. The other reason is that I think these issues are something that needs to be fixed if Bethesda wants
to see me (and maybe some other people too) buying their games. The goal is post a new thread every day about
something that is relevant to the game (so you ain't gonna see "there isn't enough nice looking clothes for mages")
and is something that isn't criticised every week (hopefully). I will try to continue this untill there is
a sale on new vegas (+all dlc, it's the dlc I really want).
What's up with the thread title? Last time I used this title people got confused that it actually meant
"Skyrim is a bad game". No it doesn't (unless you think it does). I personally I feel Skyrim is 20€ game.
Reason why I use that title is because I like the sound of it. It's spiky (like me) and it kinda rhymes (atleast better than CoD svcks).
Who am I? The most accurate description people have called me would be "pc elitist troll". I like playing good games (and I don't just limit myself to one game or genre). I have been playing games since DOOM (although I was very young back then).
Also I'm not a native english speaker so if something is confusing or has spelling mistakes I would be happy to hear your feedback.

today's topic is:

Horseriding

Ok I'll admit horseriding isn't the most important feature in the game but you can get horses in every major "city"
and Skyrim is one of the few games that actually have horses. Besides who doesn't think it's cool to chase a dragon
with your horse?

So whats wrong with horse riding then? Well first issue is that there is no pivoting on the spot like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvSlSSftC50=0m40s
This makes controlling horses extremely difficult when you want to hit somebody with a sword or pick up something.

Second, mounted combat is very poorly implemented. Melee has two problems first is pivoting and the second is the way
melee is implemented. Melee in this game doesn't have arcs with weapons which means that the animation of a melee attack
doesn't represent what the game thinks as a melee attack. This is ok-ish for foot combat but mounted combat works very much different.Which part of the sword you are swinging is suppose to hit the enemy? The first 5 degrees of the animations arc? 10 from the middle? last 5?

Archery is a little bit better because you can still point and shoot like you would expect with bow and arrows. There is just this little detail that makes it a lot worse. You can't shoot below 45 degrees. That itself isn't bad. The bad comes when you can aim your cursor below 45 degeers fooling into thinking you can actually aim there with your arrows. Bethesda could have easily fixed this by either allowing less restrictive shooting or making camera movement
more restrictive.

Being forced to play in 3rd person only forces both of these issues. Mages are all out of luck because you can't cast magic while mounted.

This is how mounted combat should be done:

This is how you should NOT do mounted combat (this is actually good combat by skyrim standards):

You might think it's a bit unfair to compair skyrim to Mount&Blade but those are two only games I think and
I have played both.

Good thread brah..

1) Cant disable kill cams

2) No respec before leaving helgen keep (forced to watch execution anytime I make new toon)

3) Constant forced 3rd person (horse, werewolf, killcams, using workstations)

4) Poor horseriding, worse than Oblivions. Slow, glitchy sprint sound, awful sprint distance.

5) Bad journal system. No details to information, too reliant on quest markers.

6) Terrible world map, more like a satelite image than a crumpled up map in my back pocket.

7) Unnessesary camera shift when drawing a weapon in 3rd person. Please leave the cam where it is.

8) Immortal NPC's. Much worse than it was in Oblivion.

9) Awful delay when switching between bow/sword in hotkey. Aswell as glitchy draw sound/animation being played twice. A year later without patching this? seriously.

10) Linear dungeons. 90% of dungeons are just straight corridors with no sense of exploration or intimidation. A 2 hour long corridor does not a deep dungeon dive make.

11) Skooma... it could have been a really unique narcotic, but the best they could come up with was a weak stamina potion.

12) No mortar pestle, at the very least let us make basic potions out in the wild. I never carried a glass alymbic for RP reasons, but always had my trusty mortar and pestle.

13) No weapon degredation. Gear maintenence was a whole other dimension one had to consider when going on an adventure.. no reason to take it out.

14) Arrows dissapear after a certain distance. This did not happen in oblivion.

15) No hand to hand skill. And cant block when using the hand to hand you can do.

16) Not 1 single bookshop.

17) No handicaps in the game world. Ie I can walk into windhelm dressed as an imperial, or walk into whiterun as a khajiit. Dont be afraid to penalise players!

18) Blacksmiths cant upgrade gear for you. This is their job, they should be able to improve your gear for a small sum of gold.

19) Rain still passes through shelters. They managed to fix this in the Fallout new vegas expansion set in the canyons.

20) Nirnroots are too loud... in oblivion they were a gentle hum, now I pick them up just to make them sthu.

i have to agree with everything you said. horseriding is simply screwed up in all terms right now. You cant move back when riding a horse and this is one serious issue. In oblivion you can walk back.

Now my turn:

1. Plain quests. No i dont want fetch and kill quests.
2. Poor story writing. So what if skyrim is about exploration? Majority of first timers will play the storyline. Alduin is a joke.
3. Skooma! It is a drug. yet, 25 stamina restore? And you DONT GET ARRESTED for carrying skooma or drinking in front of guards? wtf is this.
4. Crappy journals. Ok, so i see this 'talk to degaine' thing. Ok, talk to him about WHAT?
5. You cant refuse certain quests and they will show up in quest log. PC people have mods that solve these but what about consoles? For example, i want to use the blacksmith in falkreath but i have a quest called 'TALK TO LOD'. I HAVE TO TALK TO HIM AND THEN I CAN BUY STUFF FROM HIM BUT! I will trigger the daedric quest WHICH I DONT want to do. Stupid barbas can die in hell.
5. Crash to desktop when quicksaving when you use magic spells or under certain magic effects.
6. Half of riften are essential npcs. Great!
7. Civil war quest ending: The commanders are essential and cannot be killed. How to wipe out the entire stormcloak camps then? HUH?!
8. exiled Jarls should be unessential after the war. i want to throw Jarl laila into a pot of stew for calling me a dog.
9. Kill cams cannot be disabled. Also, if you love killcams like me, they are always the same. no variety. That brings me to:
10. NPCS PLEASE SHUT UP. I cant stand the fact you are listening to an important speech and then some belethor or sigurd idiot come by and interrupt. Oh you work for belethor? NOBODY CARES!

last one: the most important. After you hit the high levels or 50+, SO MANY DRAGON ENCOUNTERS. I love dragons dont get me wrong. At the lower levels i would say OMG IT IS A DRAGON! At expert or master level, they are so deadly i can die in 3 sec at lv 10-20.
At lv 70, you want to finish off a quest so that you can go dinner or something. Then this dragon comes and ATE the suicidal npc(e.g. alvor). Not to mention you cant fast travel and it takes a frigging long time to shout a dragon down. So, reduce dragon encounters. OR, after the main quest, limit dragons to dragon-iconed areas on the world map.

I'd hate to burst your bubble, but the New Vegas Ultimate Edition was on sale for quite a while.

Meh, I don't have a problem with horses. 45 degree thing and not being able to talk and loot while mounted are annoying things but overall I can't say I've had major annoyances with horses. Horse archery in particular is nice IMO.
