Falkreach: nothing happening

Post » Mon Jan 07, 2013 1:53 am

After having installed Hearthfire, I received a letter from Falkreath's jarl informing me that he wanted to talk me (and, indeed, it was marked as a quest).

So I headed to Falkreath to see the jarl. The problem is that NOTHING happens... I have a couple of options when talking to him (isn't he too young to be a jarl, etc.), but that is all. The quest "Talk to Falkreath's jarl" remains active even though I have talked to him.

Isn't that a bug? What's supposed to happen?

With my anticipated thanks!

Usually he will ask you to get him a drink, but it seems you might not be well known enough yet, you could go help a few people around the town and try again. If you have one of the other http://elderscrolls.wikia.com/wiki/Rare_Gifts from some other town you will need to do that one first to get the Falkreath one.

Well, aussie500, I don't have any radiant quests pending... I think I have helped quite a few people, namely :

The dog quest (given by the blacksmith), kill a vampire (given by the ex-jarl), find a diary (given by the priest of Arkay), find a party of hunters, kill the man/werefolf (from Falkreach's jail) and lift the curse on Hircine's ring. Oh yes, I also did a small quest from/for the steward and even sold corn and cabbages to a farmer.

But whether I'm well-known or not, the Hearthfire quest was to TALK to Falkreath's jark - which I did. I consider it as a bug since, having talked to the jarl, not only nothings happens, but the quest marker doesn't go away.

Right now, I'm running around in circles in Falkreath with nothing to do and with nothing happening.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

A lot of the help you say you have given are on quests unrelated to the hold, for example Daedric quests, my advice would be to return there and talk to more people, not just in the town.

Personally I think enough quests were done, but did you try doing the Berit's Ashes quest, it is only a small one. Otherwise have you killed the Jarl's Housecarl doing the Dark Brotherhood questline? I never had a problem with that but some have.

The letter usually asks you to speak to the Jarl's Steward I thought, did she have any extra dialogue after you finished all those quests?

Did you get the dialogue option "i'm looking for work" or something along those lines? That usually prompts the quest for the drink.

(This may be obvious to some, but I actually neglected to click on this the first few times I visited him, since I generally don't bother asking Jarls for work.)

When I got the letter, went to the jarl and got a "I got your letter" option. He then sent me to clear out some bandits.
Hadn't done anything in Falkreath yet. Doing quests (other than the one the jarl gives you) is only to get Thane status, not necessary to buy the land.

So, maybe leave Falkreath for a while to allow dungeons to reset in the area.? Dunno.

ps. Did you read the letter before talking to the Jarl?

Just a thought - not that it helps you much, but it might clear up some confusion. I remember reading something about how helping Dengeir with the kill a vampire quest can interfere with Siddgeir's drink quest if you do it first. I hit the same problem way before Hearthfire came out where it had locked me out of being Thane of Falkreath because a character had done them out of order. The same was apparently true (according to UESP) if you do Siddgeir's quests first.

I'm not sure if a patch ever cleared this up or even if it was by design. If that is what is causing your problem, your options (should you really want the Falkreath plot) may be limited to doing the Stormcloak side of the Civil War or giving Falkreath to the Stormcloaks during Season Unending.

I started a new character, ran to Falkreath, got him Black Briar mead, killed his bandit he assigned to me, and got approval to buy property. Have you already done these and are a Thane?

Many thanks for all your replies!

OK, to answer a few things:

1) When I downloaded Hearthfire, I had never been to Falkreath. I got the letter from the Jarl (through the messenger), read it, then decided to make my way to Falkreath.

The quest marker was to talk to the jarl and thus led me to the jarl's longhouse. This is when I first discovered that nothing happened: I only had two options to talk about with the jarl. The quest never completed and is still listed in the list of "quests to do".

2) I then spent some time in Falkreath doing various quests. One of them was indeed given to me by the she-steward (kill some ogres I seem to remember). At today's date I have seen everyone and there are no more things to do.

3) It's a good thing that I did these quests because, yesterday, after fast-traveling to Falkreath, a revered dragon killed half of the soldiers, the farmer and the priest of Arkay.

4) aussie500: No, I was not given the Berit's Ashes quest...

5) Needless to say, I'm not given the option to be a thane...

6) I have two adds-on: Dawnguard and Hearthfire. Plus the 3 unofficial patches.

7) So far, Hearthfire has been a huge disappointment:

- I couldn't get a child's bedroom in Whiterun because of the alchemy lab bug created by Dawnguard.
- I can't get a child's bedroom in Solitude because the programme doesn't recognize I have purchased Proudspire Manor.
- And now, this Falkreath problem...

All the best!

But, Hearthfire fixed that bug, so probably something else is going on with your game... Are you on PC, with any unofficial patches or mods installed?

I don't know if I talked to Jarl in Falkreath, but instead his Steward to get that house.

My Level 76 Vampire Lord Imperial, Pippa, who had helped the Empire win the civil war had the same problem. She obtained and built both Windstad Manor and Heljarchen Hall, but no matter how many times she went to Falkreath, neither the Jarl, nor his steward would give her any quests (the Inn Keeper would occasionally give her a "kill the dragon/giant" quest, but those apparently didn't impress the Jarl).

Unlike the OP, she had been to Falkreath quite a few times, so this probably won't help OP, but thought I'd share.

She had pretty much given up when she found far down on her Miscellaneous Quest list, an item something like, "Find Runil's Journal". This was a quick and easy quest, and when it was over, the Jarl gave her the "Kill the Bandits" quest, and once that was completed, the option to purchase Lakeview Manor. Pippa and I were both up til 2am this morning building Lakeview Manor. We called it a night when Pippa ran out of Bear pelts and Iron ingots.

Probably because Falkreach does not exist.

Either you are meaning the Reach or Falkreath (I am thinking Falkreath due to the Falk at the beginning)

Sorry guys, had to do that.

I have had similar issues trying to build the house near Falkreath. It's the one I really want because it's farthest south and my character, despite somehow deciding to make her home in Skyrim, does not much like the cold and snow. ( I suspect this is because her creator spent too much time in Alaska years ago)

My character is level 55 at this point, so I have a lot of time invested. I have done most of the quests in the Falkreath area. I hadn't done the letter stealing and vampire killing for Denegeir ( because he's a paranoid ass at this point, and my character helped the Imperials win the war a while back) I undertook those recently in case they were the issue with the Jarl or his steward not giving her the opportunity to buy land. No luck. I finished the remaining radiant quest in my journal. Nope. I do have a couple of fetch quests pending. Unfortunately, one of them is to get the N'Gasta book, which I have picked up and is stuck in my inventory but I cannot complete the quest because the game doesn't recognize that it's there. Does anyone know if this quest can break the home building opportunity in Falkreath? This is starting to really frustrate me. I also have a save prior to doing the vampire quest for Denegeir. Should I go back to this point?
