Skyrimmy RPGs.

I'm pretty chill with Skyrim lately, I feel like I've done all there is. Well, all that's worth the effort.

But having just recently finished reading the LotR books, and being in the middle of the Silmarillion, I'm on a fantasy binge.

So, I'm looking at RPGs to help feed my hunger. I've played through Oblivion and Fallout, and Morrowind is on my broken PC. Got any recommendations?

I'm looking at three major factors here-
Non-linearity, looting, and customization. I'm ruling out all linear games right now, that format is not suited for RPGs. I want a bit of freedom, even if not at Skyrim's level. Looting generally cones with this anyway. As for customization, I just want it. The biggest thing here is freedom.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking about DA:O, Kingdoms of Amalur, or LotR: War in the North, but I don't really know anything about them.

Does Dark Souls count as an RPG? I hear it's a good game. The games you have above are also supposedly good.

I would say watch some gameplay videos, check out their forums and if they seem like good games to you get them. I dont know what you are playing on but you can always get gamefly or something similar for a month to try them out yourself. As for other games like skyrim you can always play an older TES games.

I bought Dragon Age: Origins recently. It's not as open as Skyrim, but it's an enjoyable game nonetheless.

Dragon Age: Origins is very different from Skyrim. It's somewhat non-linear, but both the beginning and the end are pretty linear. It's also 3rd person and party based. I'm not familair with the other two you mentioned.

I would recommend the Gothic series, Gothic 1 & 2 in particular because I haven't played Gothic 3 & 4. After the Elder Scrolls series these games gave me the second most freedom of all the fantasy RPGs I've ever played. You can't just go anywhere at the start though, you need to first get strong enough.

You could also give a try to Nehrim, a total conversion for Oblivion that has been notably influenced by the Gothic series.

There's also Risen, which is a game I haven't played, but people describe it as basically the same as Gothic with more modern graphics.

As above, try out Gothic 2 and 3 both open world games. Risen as well, not played Risen 2 yet . Also Two Worlds 2 is worth a look as its another open world game , and much better than the first.

Fable 1 and Kingdoms of Amalur are great choices for action RPGs.

DA:O is quite linear in design. In classic Bioware style, you must travel to four places before the conclusion of the storyline: you can choose in which order you visit them, but that's all. It's a great game nevertheless, even if not as open world as Skyrim - I would certainly recommend it to any fan of RPG and fantasy. If you play it on PC, there will be quite a bit of micromanagement and tactical thinking involved (on a console you can't fully zoom out and people said it's difficult to position your party with adequate precision). Well-written characters, fun combat, good customization for a class-based game (no magic-wielding rogues, sadly, but a battlemage is possible).

Do NOT touch Dragon Age 2. It's vile.

Out of the games you listed, Kingdoms of Amalur would be my choice if you want open world. It's a fast-paced action RPG, feels like a single-player MMO at times, but in a good way (and this is coming from a person who can't stand MMOs). There's a lot to do, you can explore the world and find multiple sidequests, you can also mix and match your skills - which is something you're after, right? The storyline isn't the best, but gameplay is very enjoyable.

I haven't played the LotR game.

I haven't played Risen either, but I've heard good things about it. And you can't go wrong with a Gothic game.
