Less "real" mods please

Post » Tue Jan 15, 2013 1:20 pm

I think the Elder Scrolls has been becoming to real, it's not set on earth. One of the real strengths of Morrowind is that it's alien. The trees are strange, people live in giant crab and snail shells, there are huge mushroom like fungi that houses can be built into. The transport system used huge insects like creatures. Even the stone architecture is strange.

Oblivion, except Shivering Isles, moved way more toward earth.

And Skyrim seems like earth remade by a group of rpg players. The whole vib of the place feels generic fantasy.
Then there all the mods that add real (aka even more specifically earthlike) creatures and things. Maybe the Dragonborn DLC (if it ever ships) will reverse this some.

So why did I post the near whine, in the faint hope that the incredibly talented modding community might bend some of their time to making Skyrim less earthlike.

Well, a lot of this is just caused by TES lore. Skyrim is supposed to be like that; it's part of their culture. Same with Cyrodiil. Morrowind, Blackmarsh, Elsweyr, Vallenwood, and Summerset Isles are your more unusual provinces as far as lore goes. Personally, I like Skyrim's "epic reality" approach. Everything is epic yet feels somewhat plausible, like what I am seeing is obviously fantasy but I could also imagine seeing it in reality. But there are some modders out there making less "earthy" experiences, both new lands and TCs. You can find some pages on Moddb if you to mods and look under Skyrim. There are others here on the forums.
