Ingame Crafting: Questions and Suggestions

Post » Wed Jan 16, 2013 1:14 pm

For me, the best part of an MMO is being able to craft. Ive loved it since UO and have done it in every MMO I have played since. However, unlike in UO, most mmos crafting doesnt live up to my expectations and usually it ends up being a waste of time as gear acquired in instances and raids renders all player crafted gear useless.

This brings me to my first question. How will the crafting system work? Will it be like Skyrim's, which, might I say, has great potential? Or are we going to see a clone of the WoW/EQ system which has been done to death and is hardly rewarding at all.

My second question: Will resource spawns be static, like Skyrim's, and once used will respawn after a period of time. Or will it be like WoW's "node" system, where you have to run around the zone playing "find the mineral bump"? Personally, Id like to see it like Skyrim's. At least that way it will look and feel natural, not awkward and clumsy like in WoW.

My third question: will we have player run shops? Or will be going down the same boring, lame, road as WoW and have auction houses? Personally, Im sick of AH's. I want to see player run vendor shops like we had in UO.

Now to my suggestions:

To keep player crafting useful and a viable choice for players, there must be a constant system of Supply and Demand. Now, in all MMOs, demand is usually low, with the exception of a few items. This is largely due in part to the fact that items cannot deteriorate and break. That uber-epic-turbo-mega-l33t sword of ultimate pwnage you picked up will stay with you forever. you dont need to replace it, unless an expansion is released and you need a place holder untill you go and pick up the uber-epic-turbo-mega-champion-ultra-spicy-chicken-edition-beta v.1.22249771 with cinnamon sprinkles sword and dont need to replace that until the next ex-pack comes in.

My suggestion, put in item deterioration and destruction. Make it so items, like armor and weapons, can be damaged in combat and repaired, but only so many times. Eventually, items cannot be repaired and are destroyed, meaning they have to be replaced. Who better to replaced them than player crafters with player crafted items. It will help to drive the ingame economy and make sure crafters of all items are useful always. Crafters should also be able to craft gear that can compete with dungeon dropped gear. That way, players have MORE choices when it comes to personal customization and gear.

As for making magic gear, bring over the enchanting skill from skyrim, oblivion or morrowind. Allow players to make some truly awesome gear.

Another fun thing to throw in would be to have a lot of crafting skills. For example.

Blacksmithing: makes metal arms and armor

Bowcrafting & Fletching: Makes bows and arrows

Carpentry: Crafts staves and other wooden weapons as well as furniture for housing (assuming its in game)

Alchemy: makes potions, poisons, etc

Jewlcrafting: Cuts gems and crafts jewlery

Enchanting: Enchants crafted items with magical properties

Tailoring: Crafts robes, clothes, footwear and leather armors

Inscription: Crafts different spell scrolls for players to use

And the list could go on, but you get my point.

Also, since there will be factional PvP, players should be able to loot the corpses of their enemies and take their gear. I mean, in elder scrolls, you can kill and loot ALL of the carried gear off of NPCs, so why not carry the same principle over into PvP? That would give the game a truly Elder Scrolls feel. Even better, make NPC monsters that kill players loot their gear as well, so that way even PvE can have more risk v. reward gameplay.

Making it so players can lose gear means they will always be in demand for it. this will help to make a strong ingame economy and keep crafting fun and rewarding for those of us who love to RP as crafters.

Atm the answer to all three questions is: "There isn't even a base for speculations since there isn't anything published about it yet."
I think we are all curious about it, but ... we know absolutly nothing by now.^^
