Anyone Use GitHub?

Im keen to start learning some programming languages and ultimately achieve a career as a software dev. Ive heard people on the net recommend to get involved in a open source project like something on github which i can even use in the future as a resume for employees to see what ive done.

But i honestly dont know where to start with it and dont know what i should get involved in. Is github the best open source site to use?

I guess i should start learning a language first eh? I was intending to start with java but if anyone has a different suggestion im all ears :)
Would be good to hear anyones experiences of github and what sort of projects you've worked on.

I haven't used GitHub but I have a project hosted on Google Code. There is also Sourceforge which has open source applications as well. I didn't have a problem with Google Code but only having one project up there I may not be the best to ask about it.

I would say just start with small projects on your own that you may find useful and then go ahead and grab some code from one of the mentioned sites to tweak and play with.
