Classes And Skills

Post » Sat Jan 26, 2013 12:38 pm

So we've been told that TESO will feature a class system similar to most MMORPGs and the leveling system will be based on experience points and not the increase of skills like in single player TES. This would imply that class is more important and rigid then in pre-Skyrim games where it mainly served to determine your primary skills but ultimately didn't restrict you from leveling any skill or playing any way you wanted. At the same time players will be able to equip any weapon or armor regardless of class. My question is what exactly class is used for then. Does it determine abilities like in other MMOs and just not equipment? Will skills be restricted by class or open to leveling by everyone like in single player? I'm also curious as to how skills level and whether or not they'll increase based on use (previous TES) or if you'll get points by level to increase skills seeing as leveling is no longer reliant on skills increasing first.

I was under the impression the leveling system was a mix of EXP and physcially leveling up your skills by using them (Level up Archery by using your bow, 1 handed by using 1 handers, etc) And the classes serve the same purpose, giving you a set of abilities to use, but you can do bascially what ever you want when it coems to what kind of weapons and armor you want to use. Example on classes, the Dragon Knight, he has an ability that pulls enemies towards him ( Ala scorpions kunai from mortal kombat, or a death knights deathgrip from WoW ) that class at the same time could use any item or armor they so choose.

You are right about the first part - classes are a lot more rigid than in previous ESO games. You can wear any armor and use any weapon but the way you use it will have with the flavor of your original class (mages and warriors will do different stuff with swords for instance), same goes for roles where some classes will simply be better at magic, others at tanking etc. However, skills and weapons do level up with use and you can even put points into their special trees and thus evolve them to your liking, and you will have a lot of abilities to choose from. Basically your class determines what skills you will get, the weapon determines your auto-attack and block and your armor determines your defensiveness, with heavy armor inhibiting magic, and also governs a certain class depending on the armor type.

That's basically that in a nutshell.

Class determines which class specific abilities you will have. Beyond that you can use any weapon or armor. You will in fact have to skill up in their use, as well as abilities will be able to skill up and upgrade as you use them. Also weapons will come with their own abilities. We do not know yet the number or split but on our action bars we will have our class abilities and weapon abilities.

There will also be Perks in the game although its yet unknown how or when we get points to spend on them.

That would make sense. You'd still want to choose a class with abilities that go well with your playstyle but ultimately it's open ended.

Speaking of, do you know anywhere they've talked about what classes have been revealed?

Seems like there's a consensus. Overall I have to say it doesn't sound bad for an MMORPG. You have to have some structure to differentiate the player characters for the sake of making PvP and group questing worthwhile but it's good to know there will still be a good deal of TES freedom involved in character building too.

Much appreciated, I'll give it a look. I'll admit I stopped paying attention to the buzz about this game after those first details that came out suggested it was going to be WoW: Tamriel but after signing up for beta I saw some of the new information that's come out since and I'm much more optimistic.
