Not really a bug, I think it's up to you if your going to pay them or not.

as i recall, when they did charge, you could just take the gold back from their inventory so it pretty much was always free. except maybe if you didn't have that much gold to begin with.

It's more of an exploit than a bug.

The latest Unofficial patch evidentally 'fixes' this for followers who aren't spouses.

Some people are displeased at now having to pay :hehe:
