Our town is looking to build a nuclear storage facility.

I will be going to a meeting next week about this issue and would like to hear your input. Imagine you live here. What would your concerns be?

I'm all for it, and most of the opposition is completely unfounded (derp look at Japans leak), but I would like some other points of view to get ready.

The main "concerns" seemed to be over possible leaks, radiation exposure, meltdown, or general nuclear stigma stuff.

EDIT: grammer and spelling

Nuclear meltdown is impossible for radioactive waste. Stored waste has already "cooled" down for 2 decades minimum and spent. :/

My only concern would be making sure it's well-guarded, which it would be.

I don't know if it is mentioned, but the facility will be about a mile under ground in solid bedrock and a few miles outside of town. 6 feet of lead can stop gamma radiation, so 1 mile or rock and dirt should be more than adiquate. Also, the Canadian Shield (which we are in the heart of) basically never has earthquackes, so the risk of breech is almost nonexistant.

I know, but apparently anything nuclear can explode...according to some community members...
And they are looking at 500 new jobs to monitor, guard, and mantain the facility.
