Corpse rat-eating mechanism debate

Me and my housemates are a bunch of physicists and mathematicians and we were debating at great length last night how the devs programmed the mechanism whereby at the end of a mission, if you haven't cached bodies well enough (unconscious ones I mean) they will get devoured by rats leading to a kill (my friend is attempting to complete the game non-lethal).

We would like to know how the game determines whether or not a body will get eaten by rats or not. To clarify, I am referring to instances where you leave a body somwhere and then leave the area. The game seems to decide at the end of the level whether you hid the body in a sufficiently non-rat infested area such that the body will remain uneaten.

Are certain surfaces in the gameworld defined as 'any bodies left on this surface will be eaten' or is it a range within a swarm of rats? Or maybe it's probabilistic? I favour the first explanation but would like to hear the final word from a dev.

This was a very passionate debate we had so we would greatly appreciate clarification on the exact game mechanism.

Regards,

The Don
