Size Matters? - larger than life enemies -

Post » Thu Jan 31, 2013 8:37 am

We see from the the little bits of released game footage, several huge enemies.

Some may be familiar, like the Spider Daedra. She has gone from the previous size of a VW Beetle to a 20' tall Dump Truck. Others not so familar, like the monsterous burning undead thing.

This results in the group surrounding the enemy and taking turns jumping in the air.

I have mixed feelings about it as it reminds me of other games not like TES and takes me out of the element for a moment. Then again maybe it's so the players get a better view of the target?

...IDK

But I'm interested in how other see this and feel about the implementations of these "larger than life" enemies.

I remember those rare giant spawns in the Grazelands of Morrowind....

I don't mind big enemies as long as I don't need a pogo stick to attack it. Unless we get Levitation then you can make it as tall as you want.

I would like some strong enemies being big, but not all of them.
Its no problem if they make bosses 10 times bigger then your character

After Oblivion this would have felt very strang yes... but there are a number of oversized opponents in Skyrim... Playing a skinny little thief and coming across a Dwemmer Centurion was a real "Ohh hell, now I gotta be careful!" moment. Plus the hubling expeirnce of being used as a golf ball by giants just when you think you're starting to get tough.

So all in all I'm OK with it... yeessss it is a little bit of an MMO concession, nothing raises the drama of a raid like a 15" boss, but honestly I'm more concerend about how well designed it is rather then how big it is.

I am fine with enemies that are well...naturally (if I can even use that word here...lol) oversized opponents, like Giants, Mammoths, Dragons, Centurions and the familiars from Morrowind.

I guess I see the change in the Spider Daedra and must ask...Is this going to be the staple of Boss sizes in ESO? Should we assume that Draugr Deathlords are going to be the size of that 30' Flame O' Dead?

Would be hilarious to make a tiny little boss. Like imp-sized. That would be its main defense - being tiny =)

That's too funny...

Your hammer bounces off it's head and smacks you in the face. :D

Definitely an Imp-Boss. One of its attacks takes your weapon off you, and for like 3 secs it laughs crazily and performs an obscene gesture with your weap before giving it back (do you want it back?) :touched:

Yeah it does seem like developers always seem to think big is better when it comes to bosses, and really all they need to do is make them tough and give them a decent set of skills to use against you.

Big monsters are big challenges! I like epic-looking bosses, and if the have to be big to be epic, then they should go ahead and make them big... as long as I can still see my screen. I can't tell you how many times in other MMORPGs I couldn't see a single thing because my camera was inside the boss's foot.

I think the enemies need a little variety, so far the enemies look great and size is 100% not an issue.
