Issue with a created spell.

I created a Restoration spell to absorb health. Basically i used the vampiric version of the spell as a base and switched a few things including the school from destruction to restoration. The spell works fine and does what it is supposed to do in game the only problem is that it does not have an impact on raising my restoration skill. Now i've set the base cost and usage multiplier rediculously high as a part of testing, but still no impact on the skill.
On the other hand a cure disease spell that i made works properly and raises the restoration skill as expected.
My question is that i have seen some spells have left handed versions, right handed versions and either hand versions for the same spell, would this have something to do with my problem or is it just that the base effect WAS in the destruction school? With this in mind , no casting the spell does not impact the destruction skill. I've checked.

Hmm.. first thing that comes to mind is that restoration spells are not supposed to have a detrimental effect. Just for the sake of testing, could you try clearing the detrimental flag and see how it goes?
