How do I get to the general? I think I need a key but I can't find any. He is in a room behind a door that requires a key.

It's in the satchel in the undercroft, on the altar, where the journal is.

Not sure where the key is but if you mastered the pick lock perk tree then just open that near-by gate and make a molded key. That's what i did.

In the room where you take the stairs to go to where the General is there should be another path to take. It will take you to a couple rooms full of coffins. It is in there.

Yeah that is what I did too without really knowing it. Found the actual key afterward.
