May not have ran into the quest relating to it, but is there a quest involving it? I cant quite figure it out or overooked the point of opening the coffins.

yup there is a quest related to it....you get the quest by doing stuff for the dunmer in the mushroom

Its related to the quest 'Old Friends'. Do quests for Neltoh and his assitant and you will get it eventually.
