PVP Faction Balance

Post » Thu Feb 07, 2013 4:48 am

I'll preface this by saying that this post is directed at the pvp community. If you don't care for pvp then please withhold remarks.

Among fans I've talked to as well as polls on this forum, it's obvious that there's a lot of favoritism for the Ebonheart Pact. The Covenant is pretty human heavy with two factions being humans and the Dominion is similarly elf heavy. The Pact has the best balance between elves, humans and a beast race. This can become a problem once players start engaging in pvp, especially when they hit 50 and pvp becomes slightly more central to gameplay. In other faction based pvp games, similar problems to this occur and the result is players scrambling off servers in droves, to find a server where pvp battles aren't so one-sided. WoW and SWTOR are two examples of this. With only a single server for this game, jumping servers isn't an option. How can we fix this without destroying the lore?

We have three factions, the most time it will be balanced. The same game design worked in DAoC, so i hope here too.

More factions does not make in any way promote a balanced game. Asheron's Call 2 was evidence of that. Let's not forget that the dominant faction will crown an emperor on the server. If one side outnumbers the other two significantly, then it's not any stretch for them to have a pretty firm hold on it. But that's not even the real issue. The real issue is that one side being heavy-handed can result in players on the other factions losing interest in pvp, and even avoiding it.

Question 7

Q: Is there a control mechanism to make sure that the factions don’t become imbalanced in Cyrodiil?

A: There will be very high caps. If one side is overpopulated, the other two sides can combine forces. The more territories that you own, the harder to defend. This will give the lower population side a chance to come in to take some territory. So the system is self-balancing in a way.

See, this is great and all, but I'm talking about a more general sense of world pvp and you're talking about the territory game. We all know that ya win some and ya lose some but I'm pointing out that if you don't win enough, then it stops becoming fun. Even casinos know this, which is why their slot machines have a rate at which they give out prizes.

You underestimated how hart it is to fight a war at two fronts. One front will break and short after this the second.

See, you're not understanding what I'm saying. I am adventuring alone and not looking to plant a flag on a fort or anything. I run into 2 enemy players. We fight and I lose. Same scenario happens again but this time I have a buddy and we beat the other players. Now this is a common occurance in MMOs but over a long time, the first scenario happens more often to me than the second scenario (in which I outnumber them) simply due to faction imbalance. This is open world pvp. After awhile of this repeating, the side which loses more constantly starts having less fun. Then again. This happens commonly in MMOs. This is what I'm addressing.
