Is There A Way To Remove The Tube From A Tube TV?

Post » Fri Feb 08, 2013 3:11 pm

I am going to be doing something which has a tube television submerged in water. I've been told that the tube(s) in TVs keep the electrical charge in them for pretty much ever. I was wondering if there was a way of removing the tube(s) so no one gets hurt with the TV in a pool of water. Thanks!

Have you tried dumping it in the water unplugged?

I have the technical skills of a boiled potato, so I'm no help in fixing the TV, but I'm curious as to why exactly you need to submerge a TV anyway.

Unplugged it still holds an electrical charge. And I'm using it for my sculpture class.

i think it's the capacitor in the TV that is responsible for that, i remember reading a guide on locating and discharging the capacitor a long time ago but i forget the process now

The CRT tube will hold it's charge indefinitely. The other ones may discharge over time. There are ways to safely discharge them. There are also a lot of really stupid ways of discharging them. If I were you, I'd make a fake TV set and not use a real one. Especially if you don't know how to properly discharge the tubes. This thread is going to lead to a lot of stupid answers and many of them are going to lead to your hurting yourself.

Wrong. The tubes in a tube TV can hold their charge for days, months, years and some of the voltages can be lethal.
