Do we really matter?

So I am in a Interpersonal Communications class and my teacher has a great view on our life.

So here we go,

He was talking to the class and was stating that, as a whole, nobody really matters. Nothing we do matters, nothing we say matters, and we are not unique in any way shape or form. At first I was like "what the frik is this guy talking about?" But then he put up a good argument (which any person trained in the art of communication should do). He said that us as humans tend to put emotional attachments to everything we do and when you take off all of the emotional layers our actions and interactions don't really matter in the grand scheme of life.

He also states that we all are more similar than we are different. This point made a little sense when he was saying how in relationships we tend to look for the differences in a person (which I can argue against because I believe that is a personal opinion), but he didn't really back that one up as much as he did the other statement. So basically he is stating that we all are the same and that none of us have unique properties that set us apart from everyone else that surrounds us.

Thoughts? Comments? Opinions? Hateful statements that will get you a warning? (I wouldn't advise doing the last one...)

And please lets keep this out of religious comments. I am very religious and if I can keep my comments out of this then so can you.

I like to think I matter.

Please forgive me if this is stepping to far into the realm of religion. I promise I'll go no further than this, but isn't a view on life such as the one stated against most religions? Just a question. That's all.

Actually yes it is.

Kinda answering your question without stepping into religion I honestly think that this is his opinion. The thing with communications nowadays is that people in this field tend to put their opinions as fact. I have learned more in one week of going through my other argumentation class than I have ever learned. The art of communication is practically dead. We tend to think of communication and argumentation as a debate which is really only one type of communication and argumentation. Once we get this thought into our head, we tend to think that our opinion is actually fact rather than opinion.

So yes you are correct sir!

No. When the planet is done with us it will shake us and everything we've built, created off of it. When tge day is done, there will be no trace of us and no one to remember us. We are an insignificant speck on the earth's back.

We do not matter.

Oh, maybe even the hot teacher in the class nextdoor. :hubbahubba:

If he does as you suggest, best make sure you be coming back here and sharing it with us. Well share it with them, not me. I have no interest in such things of course.
