Damn it, Beth! (Dragon riding)

Post » Fri Feb 15, 2013 7:47 am

Why? Of all features, WHY must you half-ass THIS one? Since release we've wanted to ride them. Now that it's finally here, it's one of, if not THE, most underwhelming mechanics I've ever experienced. When it was first revealed, I was excited. I thought I'd finally be able to see Skyrim from the perspective of Dragons. Nope, not happening.

Sure we can get on them, land them and tell them to attack something, but what the hell is there to attack? Chickens, cows, farmers and city guards, oh joy! Not to mention how FUN it is to fly in an EVERLASTING CIRCLE!

Riding dragons went from traveling Skyrim in style (What I was HOPING FOR) to a glorified fast travel Merry-Go-Round.

Words cannot fully express how disappointed I am with this "feature".

Note: I'm not disappointed with DB as a whole. I'm loving everything else. It's just that riding was my most anticipated feature of DB (OTHER than it being on Solstheim) and they just got outright lazy with it. :shakehead:

lolwut

The dragon riding is quite possibly the most poorly implemented feature I have seen in any game, ever. It's a truly momentousness achievement in terrible.

I think it was hyped too much for what it turned out to be.

when was it hyped? like all you see in the trailer is like one second of the dovahkiin on a dragon near high hrothgar.

Bethesda NEVER made a big deal out of it, ever. It was one second in the trailer.

Wow.

You just figured this out? Were you purposely avoiding the Draonborn section until it was released on PS3/PC. I ask, because within a few days of its release on the 360, people were saying exactly what you said about the Dragon Riding mechanic.

As it turns out, you can mimic fast-travel using dragon riding by continually selecting new targets.

As for the hype... it's not Beth's fault. Fans saw someone on a dragon during the trailer, and it snowballed from there. It was purely fan speculation that caused the hype, not any action from gamesas.

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed. I can only conclude that they didn't want you using Dragons to rapidly "discover" every fast travel spot on the map - but there could have been a relatively easy (I think, perhaps not) solution to that - just make it so that you can't get close enough to sites to "discover" them if you're riding a dragon. So, you land somewhere nearby, then go walk up to them and discover them.

Also, why do I have to get off a dragon to fast travel between skyrim and solstheim? I guess they decided not to create a second fast travel 'marker' for the dragon (when you're on foot and "fast travel" to between the lands, you load up on the ship; of course if you're on a dragon, you probably shouldn't spawn on the ship, but that seems like it should be easy to fix).

I'm sort of relieved, actually. The map would have felt really tiny if we could just fly anywhere, and invisible walls would have been really obvious

Then again, I've yet to fly on a dragon and experience it to its fullest. I'm basing this off of YouTube walkthroughs.

I'm not talking about a features that are broken, or don't work as intended. That happens. But, Bethesda somehow managed to take the concept of riding dragons, and turn it into something that is completely useless, and not even sort of enjoyable. There are legitimately no redeeming qualities to dragon riding. I can't think of any way to make dragon riding worse than it was in Dragonborn. I wasn't even a guy who was really looking forward to it ahead of time, but I was impressed with how bad it was.

I find dragon riding very fun, as do many other people I know.

This. Viewing the scenery from atop a Dragon is worth the $20 by itself.

There were actually a number of media statements and references to it...Youtube is not what I consider to be a reputable source, which is a view validated by your statement.
