What if TESO doesnt have your class?

Can you "make your own"? Lets imagine for arguments sake that the only 2 melee classes on release will be the Dragonknight and the Paladin. But you really want to be an Orc Barbarian. Wear light armor(leather/studded) and Weild a 2 hander. So you decide well DK seems like the closest maybe so you pick that, and forgo all of the DK skills. Are you just going to be a ghetto DK RPing a barbarian, or will this be a competative character?

They say we can use whatever armor/weapons we want but...will we be forever hamstrung by our initial class if thats all they had available?

I am really hoping they make classes and skills flexible enough that you can basically make your own class, like I want to be a healer, who dual wields short swords, also uses a bow, light armor, of course restoration and possibly destruction magic.

I don't think you should worry too much about it, the way i interpreted(?) it it seemed like you could make any class you want. Much like in Skyrim.

While this does not certainly appeal to everyone it is just fine with me. :)

What "class" are you thinking of? I'm pretty sure you'll be able to play it.

Yeah, I am really curious to see how classes will work.

I mean, Developers have already said that you could modify your playstyle.

The said for example "you can be a sneaky-guy who heals" or "sword weilding mage" and stuff like that (not exact quotes).
But then, they said there would classes like the Dragonknight.

How does that work? can you be a sneaky DragonKinight who heals?? In what ways are you restricted by your choice of class??
It all sounds too weird and kinda of contradictory.

i am pretty sure they will make the classes as open as possible. it will be interesting to see how they handle this though. there has to be some sort of cap as allowing 1 character to learn everything will be very bad for the game in the end

I would hope for the best and prepare for the worst; their job is to get you hyped and think it's going to be different.

Though it really will be much more open ended than other games, I don't think you have to worry. It won't be like Skyrim though. Play the game, listen to the news and find out, just don't set unrealistic expectations!

The classes will probably work like this:

You choose Dragon Knight, so this opens up a spellbook with skills such as "flames" "leap attack" "fire breath" "side slash" etc. Now lets say you wanted to play a healer oriented DK. Your class spellbook might also have healing skills(all classes will), but they wont be as diverse or effective as a Templars skills. So if you wanted to play a healer oriented DK, you would use your healing skills a lot in combat, and level up restoration skill(which is one of the skills that all characters can level up).

I have a hunch that classes will have specific spells that are unique to the class, and also a list of skills similar to previous TES games that any class/character can level up. Stuff like Heavy armor, one hand weapons, sneak, restoration, destro, etc.

Basically, everyone can be sneaky, everyone can heal, everyone can use 2handed weapons, everyone can use light armor, but that doesnt mean that a Dragon Knight will be a better sneaky healer than, say, a Monk(a class built around healing in light armor). I think the class options are archetypes to base your character around, and you can then tweak it to fit your personal style of play. I think there will be choices for everybody.
