I believe my Transmission Cable has broken, The shifter just moves freely it wont catch at all. It is not my Transmission because it has never displayed the usual signs. I can also go under the hood and manually move the Linkage with my hand and it will shift into gear. I got it back home by doing this, but when I got home I was able to shift the shifter back into park and it went into park, Could that mean my cable has just come loose or is it likely broken somewhere between the tranny and the knob? I can see the cable under the dash moving when I move the shifter knob but it wont move the Tranny link. I have a 1996 Ford Taurus GL btw. I have also heard it could be the safety mechanism causing the cable to not engage. Any tips would be appreciated, does anyone know how much a new shift cable costs?
