Why Oblivions dungeons were better than Skyrims

Post » Sun Feb 17, 2013 11:52 pm

firstly, they didnt look like medieval nightclubs. Skyrims dungeons are too bright, they dont feel like ancient caves or dungeons with neon lights decorating the interior... this also really svcks for stealth players. Oblivions dungeons had MUCH better lighting. You could actually distinguish shadows and move between them splinter cell style.

Oblivions dungeons were often sprawling and multilayerd.. Skyrims dungeons offer little to no exploration. They are more or less straight corridors. One could get lost in Oblivions dungeons, this makes for a memorable dungeon dive unlike following a corridor to the loot chest at the end.

Oblivion dungeons had puzzles that you had to think about, sure they werent too complex, but were better than the lame ass recycled picture puzzle you see in all skyrim dungeons. Note to Beth: if you make a puzzle, how about taxing the players brain.

regardless, Daggerfall dungeons are still the best in the series.

Can't say I've ever played Daggerfall, but I can definitely say that Oblivion dungeons were better. Maybe because of the random generator they used?

Best dungeons I've ever explored though probably belong somewhere along the Phantasy Star games, the early ones. Simplier game, all tunnel, but it was a fricking maze you could easily get lost in for hours...real life hours.

The only parts I really agree with are the darkness and sprawling design. But for the rest Oblivion's dungeons simply fall flat due to most of them having homogenous, uninspired designs with very little to set them apart. They may as well have been randomly generated. Skyrim's dungeons are much more thoughtfully designed and they did a great job getting as much variety as they could out of a limited set of tile pieces.

I agree when it comes to the linear design. Haven't even noticed the lighting.

I even plan on playing Daggerfall again just to be in a huge maze again, I loved that.

You should at least have the option to go through a dungeon clockwise or anti-clockwise and to decide which next level of the dungeon you want to visit first, like in many of Oblivion's dungeons.

I don't think so. I didn't care to enter in the majority of Oblivion's dungeons cause they were boring and had no kind of backstory to them. Skyrim's dungeons are more interesting and I always visit the same ones on more than one occasion.

Reading the title of this thread brought flashbacks of going through the same dungeon design over and over and over... No thanks, Oblivions dungeons can stay in the past.

Btw, the only reason skyrim's dungeons don't have layers is because the game can handle bigger areas now, so less loading screens anyway.
