I kid you not, I discovered this on accident but I've tested it several times now and it works like a charm.

If you adopted Sofie before buying out all of her flower baskets (they literally spawn about 5 seconds, so by the end of the day she can have a LOT of them...if you don't believe me, buy flowers, buy her baskets, then ask about her situation--by the time she's down, she'll have 1-2 flower baskets for sale!) and can't give her presents, you're going to have to scare the bejeezus out of her, and I have two methods:

• This probably won't be too popular (or make me popular...), but making her hostile in anyway, e.g. hitting her several times, will make her drop any baskets she has. Afterward, do something like cast Calm and deal with the aftermath however you can (that's a pretty messy method)
  
• If she or another child has a pet, cast fury on it, then immediately equip calm. She'll drop her basket(s) when she sees the oh-so-deadly rabbit or fox, and then cast calm on the pet ASAP, or your spouse, housecarl, or follower will deal with the problem their way.
