What's Valve been up to?

I know they've been keeping quiet lately but does anyone know why that is? Everyone knows there's that joke where they have yet to make a third game in a series and they might be doing that, but really they've been quiet for awhile. We haven't seen anything Half-life related since 2007, and haven't actually seen a brand new Half-life game in nine years. I'm not complaining, I just think it's weird. The only thing I can think that they're doing is making a new engine or planing world domination.

My theory has been that they're waiting for the next generation of consoles before releasing Half Life 3/Source 2 engine.

Meanwhile they're just printing money with Steam/TF2 and providing nice free updates to their games like http://www.pcgamer.com/2013/02/12/left-4-dead-2-extended-mutation-system/.

They've been keeping quiet lately? They announced their "console" and ported Steam to Linux!

And I hate to say it, but I feel that the type of FPS that Half-life is really has been dated since the release of games like Call of Duty, Gears of War, and Skyrim. People anymore just want to use a cover system with iron sights in a multiplayer openworld, but I'm probably just reaching too far with that last statement.
