why does CK crash?

Sometimes apparently without reason CK crashes and it can happen even when I'm doing nothing, so I lose everything not saved. why?

It's an intensely modified and patched version of the Fallout GECK. Which is an intensely modified version of Oblivion's Construction Set. Which is an intensely modified version of Morrowind's Construction Set.

Each version is just build upon the last, which ends up having the effect of it all being held together with masking tape and hot glue. In the end it's a developer tool, not a consumer tool, and therefore doesn't have to go through all the rigorous testing that the game itself does. Plus it tends to use more memory than the game itself, and while it is LAA enabled if it reaches ~4GB of RAM it will crash.

Just save often, utilise a version control system and just be careful.

The ever unexplained phenomena we're all accustomed to.

But it only happens to me under 2 conditions: Trying to add a script to a quest before saving(it can't be the first thing you do) and something with having 2 magic effect windows opened..

Oh haha.

Doing any of the following causes a crash for me. Oddly, it doesn't usually crash right away, but invariably crashes at some point later in the same session.
  • Previewing imagespacemodifiers and scrolling away from one before it's done animating
  • Editing shader effects, at all
  • Editing particle effects, particularly swapping out textures
  • Opening more than one of any single type of window at once (i.e. two magic effects, two quests, etc). This also causes glitches while both are open, such as one magic effect's settings getting wiped empty if both are changed and saved.
And, of course, CK will just randomly be gone sometimes after I run Skyrim to test a change.

Of course, I have also run fairly active sessions for 5 hours or more without a single hiccup, so it's not all bad. If I do anything on the list above, I generally just save right after, then relaunch the CK and keep going.

What OS are you running? The CK randomly crashes for me every so often in Windows 8 on any machine I've tested it on. It runs great in Windows 7, however.
