PlayerCharacter six in MMORPG's?

Post » Tue Mar 05, 2013 5:24 pm

I was just wondering, as someone who hasn't played MMORPG's, how common is it for people to play as a character of the opposite six? In past Elder Scrolls games, I've always recreated the same female archer to play as, even though I'm a guy. But with MMORPG's, it would be different because I'd be playing with others, so I'm afraid it would be weird to repeat the pattern with ESO. Of course, it would make it a little difficult to RP with others when my low voice comes out of my blonde chick.

What do you guys think? Is it awkward or not to play as a character of a different six, and are you planning to do so or not?

I almost always make female characters. Not because of some sixual perversion with pixels. I just find it more aesthetically pleasing. I never role play as a female, I leave that bit out of anything I do. Gender choice is purely independent for me.

It is rather common for people to play as, or at least have female characters despite not being female, and vice versa, so no weirdness there.

Well, I knew I wouldn't be the only one, but wasn't sure if it was a thing that was frowned upon or something.

Stranger: Hey, wanna join a party.
Me: Sure.
Stranger: What the heck!? I thought you were a chick! Should've known... There are no real girls on the internet.

But so long as people don't consider it weird, and as long as I'm comfortable with it...

I never play as a female in online games. Can't exactly say way. I like to alternate in single player games, though.

for the most part, regular online gamers will assume anyone they meet is male regardless of character gender. If everyone in these types of games played the same gender as they are in real life, you'd hardly ever see a female.

As for myself, I tend to always make several characters in mmorpgs because I like to be able to fill numerous roles for my guild at endgame (usually I tank or play a support character, so I like to also have a damage dealer and healer at max level if our guild needs it for a certain raid or dungeon).
I typically make my first/main character a male, but I prefer to use a female for mage and rogue type characters and a male for melee/warrior types. More recently, I've become less of an alt-o-holic and put my focus into two characters only, with one being a male tank and the other being a female damage dealer or healer. I find that focusing on fewer alts allows for more progression and creates more familiarity and effectiveness with each.

^^ Win

I'll be playing as a girl vs a guy 50/50, many do it, some look down upon it, but they're usually ignorant/secluded in their small box world and should be left there. If you think the only reason a guy plays as a girl is to gold dig/be a perv, try something like duct tape to open your eyes.

It's fine, and it's only slightly awkward if you're joining a party + voice chat and have to explain you're a guy, most won't even care.
