I don't dispute that Richard Garriott is a great game designer, although it's a bit egotistical to call himself the best.

Well he's had a lot of influence in gaming, even to this day. When you see so many people copy your formula with some tweaks, I guess it's hard not to feel that way.

Mm, he may have a point. Consider how young most people in the VG industry are and it's not surprising that they maybe don't have sufficient skill. And of course when you get older you either go into management or are fired, so there are very few actually senior Senior X (programmers, modellers, whatever) people directly involved in a game, at least not when it comes to big publishers. When this topic comes up I always think of the "Senior" Designer in that one Bioware video who couldn't have been more than 20 years old. That wound me up just the tiniest bit.

Garriot comes across as more than a little stuck in the past but I reckon he's got half a valid point here.

People dislike Molyneux because he comes across as a tool and promises more than he can deliver, but they forget that he was responsible for some truly excellent games and practically invented the 'god game'. The same can be said for Will Wright with the 'sim' genre, and Chris Roberts who created Wing Commander which was light years ahead of it's time at release. They, along with Garriot himself, are rightly revered.
