Okay, I have a problem with my PC. no display on the monitor

Post » Thu Mar 21, 2013 8:12 am

Last night, I went into msconfig to select 6 processors in the advanced boot options. Then I restarted. Planetside 2 froze on startup. I probably had to restart my PC by holding down on the power button around 10 times. I did a clean install of Planetside 2. Nothing. Now Counter Strike: Global Offensive and Sleeping Dogs freeze on start-up but Skyrim and Team Fortress 2 are working fine for now.

Would resetting msconfig help? How would I reset msconfig? I'm in Windows 8.

Also, I tried loading up Sleeping Dogs, it froze, so I restarted by holding down the power button. I tried Counter Strike: Global Offensive. That froze on start up also. Except now when I tried turning it on. Nothing would display. I reseated the GPU, still nothing even though every thing is connected and all the fans are running.

Could the screen not displaying be because of all the restarts? Also, how do I fix my game problem?

I tried pushing F2 and F11 when the screen was not displaying but there was no error-type noise coming from the speakers.

Please help, I'll try and provide as many details as I can if you ask.

The screen wouldn't break from turning your PC off. However you shouldn't touch anything in msconfig unless you know what you're doing. Windows 8 loads blindingly fast anyway.

Try letting it boot for a while, and turn your speakers up. See if you hear the welcome sound that plays when Windows launches. If you do, then the monitor/GPU is broken. If not, then your PC may not be booting at all.

Got access to another monitor to test it out? Even a TV or something to rule out the display? Have you also got a spare GPU (maybe from an old build) that you could use to test?

The thing is that I don't think Windows 8 plays a sound for me when I turn my PC but good news! The display worked. I guess I needed to let my PC cool down. I doubt the monitor would fail, its as new as my PC build which I built in January.

But what about the game freezes on start-up? Would resetting msconfig help?

Just revert any changes you made. If it was running fine before and stopped working correctly after you messed with something, then you know what's wrong :P

Yeah, I just wanted confirmation. Yeah I guess I learned my PC needs to cool down sometimes with these restarts. Computers are truly the most temperamental machines out there.

This used to be true, then they invented the menopausal wifebot.

Okay, Counter Strike still freezes on start up. I'm verifying the game's files right now. I'm going to do the same for Sleeping Dogs and possibly Skyrim and TF2 if they freeze on startup.
