Non combat builds?

With the current info that we have gathered.
Is it possible for us to spec a non combat character, Perhaps something like a pure alchemist who wander the world gathering his ingredients.
Will we be able to level up just by crafting?

I'm thinking...

I'm picturing the alchemist wondering into a cave for fungus and finding a somewhat disgruntled occupant.
I'm thinking that alchemist won't be doing all that well if he doesn't learn to protect himself a little.

ofcourse the alchemist will need to protect himself, But as a pure alchemist, combat is not your main focus. You only fight when you need to protect yourself, otherwise the alchemist will just wander.

Edit: Also, the alchemist will avoid combat at all cost.

I don't think crafting will grant experience for character-levels. You might get some way by sticking to non-combat quests (like collecting books for the Mage's Guild) and exploration (discovering new locations grants exp). There are also non-combat spells like Magelight which can be gained from the Mage's Guild, so those could be part of your "build".

I'd say it might be a bit more difficult than in the single player games, and even then it was quite hard to make it without any sort of combat. But people will try, and there will be better and worse ways to pull it off.

I can't imagine why you would want to.

Your ingredient is blocked by an angry mudcrab. You could hit it a few times, begin to level up armor and weapon skills, then grab your material, or you could struggle to survive against increasingly hard opponents.

What happens when the supplies you need are "ON" the opponent? Suppose you need chitin..

Bearing in mind trends on other games I think you'll find you have a very hard and impractical job doing that. Shops usually sell ingredients for inflated prices in online games - this will most likely be the case from the outset. Why? Because there will be a number of people buying hastily to try and level up crafts skills as fast as they can, so they will be willing to pay over the odds. Simple rules of competition. From the outset, it'll really pay to gather supplies and sell them, even if you halt your own skill growth.

As time goes by, the demand for lesser supplies will drop off, and prices will fall. They will remain relatively easy to farm for progressing characters though. Many will resort to farming them for cash. The market will swell and prices will fall. Best time to buy back the supplies you sold and level your skills. Crafters that make the top end supplies will initially get premium prices for them, as those trying to progress at the top end use every advantage they can find. As more people reach those levels of crafting, competition will drop the prices back down again.
