Unofficial Bioshock Franchise Thread #3

Note To Moderators:

My apologies to the forum moderators if this thread already exists somewhere, but a search result yielded that the previous thread had been locked because the OP had not wrote a proper introduction and merely continued straight on from the thread prior. If it does exist, then naturally just delete/lock this thread. I just felt that a quality franchise, which is also heavily in the limelight at the moment with a new release, deserves its own thread.

About Bioshock:

Firstly, since this is the very reason for the previous thread's closure and for those measly few of you who don't know what it is, Bioshock is an FPS game series developed by Irrational Games (originally under the name of 2K Boston/2K Australia) and published by 2K Games. Whilst each game is unique with its own individual story, characters (though there are some recurring ones between the first and second games) and, in the case of Bioshock Infinite, an entirely different setting, the gameplay and plots have recurring themes. Each game involves the player genetically enhancing their body, through the usage of Vigors and Gears in Infinite or Plasmids and Tonics in the original two titles, and themes of a Utopian society turned bad.

Thread Rules:

Use this thread to discuss anything regarding the Bioshock franchise. This includes the video-games (past, present and future), possible movies, comics, books or any other form of media related to the series. However, when doing so, please do be considerate of others. Not everyone will have played every single game or read all the books, so please use spoiler tags where appropriate and warn which title you will be spoiling within. Other than that, the usual forum rules just apply.

My Message:

I, myself, have a few questions I would like to ask to those who have played Infinite. Without spoiling anything, can anyone tell me if there are any links to the original two titles? Like, would it benefit to play both Bioshock 1 & 2? I am in the progress of playing the original, but doubt if I'll ever bother with the second - seeing as it wasn't even by the same group. Also, which combat system is Infinite more akin to? Can you dual-wield Vigors and weapons like you could in Bioshock 2 or is it the method of switching a la the original? Also, is the horror element from the original still present at all in Infinite? Whilst not absolutely terrifying, the original Bioshock is incredibly tense. The dark, claustrophobic corridors have Rapture have made for a few jump scares....

I'm near the end of Infinite and I have a couple of things to say...

- I didn't like the first one at all. I'm enjoying this more.

- Textures are terrible

- I love Elizabeth

- I'm not a fan of the shooting combat, but the powers are cool.

- The beach part is embarrassing

- Feels and even looks kind of like Dishonored, which I think is a much better game.

- Game Informer lost all credibility to me for giving this a 10.

I'll add my final feelings after I finish it, which should be by this weekend.

The first one is pretty good, as far as an FPS game goes in particular. I also felt, just from the trailers, that Infinite has a similar vibe to Dishonored. Which combat system does it use? Can you dual-wield like in Bioshock 2 or is it like the original? Is horror still present at all? Though I doubt how it can be pulled off in a bright, open place like Columbia...

How is the beach embarrassing?

How does an entire outlet loose credibility for one person's opinion? Tons of people gave the game a 10/10 or their equivalent. While I don't fully agree, it's a completely valid option.

Also not sure where you see the Dishonored similarities outside of the architecture. Even then, there are some large differences.

I'm currently playing the first one. It was somewhat difficult for me to get into, but now I'm loving it. The game makes me nauseous for some reason, though, so I have to restrict my gaming sessions.

I don't know why it happens, but it's not only Bioshock, and it svcks. If anyone have had similar reactions (probably not) - how do you cope with it, and if you have a secret remedy or something, feel free to share! :P

Which system are you playing on? It might be a low FOV. It does give some people headaches. If you are on a PC and have access to console commands, try increasing the FOV and it might help you. I used to have this problem with Skyrim, but after many hours playing it my eyes have just adjusted and I don't suffer from it anymore.

I was the same with the original. Could never get into it, but picked it up today and played it for roughly 6 hours straight. It is an incredible game! Though, despite watching countless horror movies and even finding renowned scary games like Amnesia relatively timid, there is something really creepy about Bioshock. I just don't know what it is...

If anyone could answer my questions in the OP, I'd also appreciate it.

Are you on PC? If so, then it's probably the field of view. Bioshock has some really bad FOV issues. Find "horizontal FOV lock" in the options menu and disable it, see if that helps.

Regardless of one person's opinion, the game is being largely met with positive criticism. Metacritic ranks it, or so the last time I checked, as the highest-rated game of the entire generation. Now, considering that this generation has been ridiculously long (around six or seven years now), I'd say that that is pretty impressive!

Yeah, I'm on a PC. I'll try to check out the FOV. Thanks, guys.

You are welcome. Try it out and let us know how it goes.

Another option to consider, if on consoles (I know this applies to the Xbox 360 and probably the PlayStation 3 also), is to ensure that your frame rate is limited. Although a higher frame rate is really nice, turning it off results in hideous screen tearing and awful textures that gave me a headache after just a few minutes of trying it out.
