The Final Boss

Post » Fri Apr 19, 2013 11:18 am

You've conquered your way through countless enemies, and persevered on through who knows how many bosses to reach the last boss. So, here's my question, how many times should you face the "final" boss in a fight?

I mainly ask this cause because my friend showed me a game, and he faced the end boss, defeated it, faced it again, defeated it, and faced it again for a third time before the boss finally died. Personally, I don't mind if the boss revives, with subsequent cinematics or actions inbetween, though it does seem to be a tad much when he/she/it just "revives" three times in a row and you have to repeatedly kill them. That "I WILL NEVER DIE!!!" scenario does seem to be a bit annoying at times.

Something like Alduin is perfect. Probably the best boss fight I've ever seen. I agree that multiple revives can get tiresome.

The multi-parted Ganon fights come to mind... and I quite enjoy those. If it's well structured and paced, why not?

Oh you mean a collective gang [censored]* and poof? It was very anti-climatic in my own humble opinion.

[censored] is censored? * forced six

I liked the 13 formed final boss of Persona 3.It was rather...inspiring. Literally. Every time Nyx changed forms, she'd say something inspirational xD

The boss should always come back a second time and be double as strong. It's an unwritten law.

Yeah, Nyx was a great boss.

I remember in MMZ3 you fought the last boss three times, all different forms though. Something like that is always fine as long as the different forms have different AI/attack patterns. It would just get repetitive after awhile, though. And there should be a good reason for fighting the last boss more than once, not simply "well we're missing a boss fight so let's just revive the last boss again" or something cheap like that.

I'll humor you. Why? Shoddy writing aside, I'm willing to hear defences as to why the final battle with Alduin was good, and I would honestly like to hear any redeeming qualities.

None. You should get to the end only to find that someone else has already killed the final boss (his ambitious underling, another intrepid adventurer, whatever).
