http://kotaku.com/the-next-xbox-will-be-revealed-on-may-21-479691780I'm a PC gamer but do you think there is the slightest hope that the next DooM might get a teaser at this event. Just a teaser I'm sure id can pull that off. I mean most games id software released were teased years in advance. So even if it isn't a launch title maybe a tease is necessary and also to put it into gamers minds for the next generation that DooM is coming.

Plus I feel Evil within might be there. This would be a good showcasing of id Tech 5 and getting more of the audience familiar with it.

Any thoughts?

I really doubt it, I wouldn't be expecting many 3rd party games at the unveiling event, maybe that ridiculous Crytek vanity project (Codename Kingdoms \ Ryse) they've been working on for the last few years. id aren't on the list of e3 exhibitors either (though Bethesda are).
Your best bet would still be Quakecon

MS doesn't really have that many first party unlike Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft's money is on third party. We will see Crytek, Halo, Call of duty, the usual bungie, ubi and EA stuff. What about Bethesda? Are they not planning an all out marketing attack for this coming gen?

Well at least I can hope that the game Machine games is making is an id property and not a new IP. If that happens we might see a Quake or Wolf before DooM

But even at that I wouldn't be expecting too many games at all to be revealed a month before e3, it'll probably focus more on the system itself and their entertainment properties than upcoming games.

Yes they do but how many of them make core games? Twisted pixel, turn 10 and lion head and maybe another. I'm not saying there will be too many games but a reveal event is more precious than an annual E3. People will reference a reveal even for years to come and E3 is just an E3. Don't people still remeber Sony for their CG reveals. Not many remeber the E3 that happend that year or anyother event. Just saying maybe not the whole shabang but a teaser or at least a Logo in there to make the crowd aware. Plus this will be aired on Spike so lot more common crowd will also be watching. It makes a world of a difference.

Plus Id rebooted in Fall of 2011 it's about a year and a half now. They already had the engine ready and for all you know a lot of assets too. So they might actually be closer to completion than one would believe. If not they have to be ready to show off a teaser by now.

Sony's reveal was what Knack, pretend forza, another infamous, another killzone and some tech demos. Awesome line up lol

Microsoft will be pushing their centre of the living room stuff like tv and if the rumours are true it's a lot of hardware to cover with multiple skus and kinect 2.

if id are going to reveal anything this year, I'd bet on Quakecon for the early in development reveal stuff just like Rage and repeating the question isn't really going to change my answer lol. I don't really get why you'd want to see 'at least a logo' it's not like the game is rumoured, you know for a fact it's in development and has been for quite some time and you know they've been really clear that they won't be showing anything of Doom 4 until it's close to shipping.

hardware speed transistor count will increase deciding factor achievable next big step is speed which will also enable mastery over smaller architecture at least this librarian thinks so since we have not made the transition to terahertz commercially already

Sony third party: DeepDown, Destiny, Drive club, FF, Watch dogs, Witness, Diablo 3. I am still counting a good number of third party games excluding the first party tech demos.

No Doom 3 and Rage were first shown at WWDC not Quakecon as the their engine demos and game teasers. So no they were not first at QuakeCon.

As far as the logo is concerned, it is a matter of image. Id software is being forgotten by gamers and general public. Last thing you want is the company to be so irrelevant that Bethesda decides to shutter it. You really think XboX reveal gets more attention by mass public than an event like QuakeCon? It's about relevance.

Epic was a massive PC studio and nobody in console world cared about them but they were the first movers during the 360/PS3 generation and look at where they are versus id software. It's not for me it's for the company to show that they still exist.

You think people would care about Valve if they only showed their face every time they released half-life. No... No one on consoles cared about valve until Gabe actually came to the E3 and said Portal 2 will be the best on PS3. That's when people actually paid attention. Orange box did nothing for their image on consoles.

Blizzard also wants a piece of this pie now and they are making sure. They had absolutely nothing to show for at the PS4 event. Yet they came shouted a few words and left. When people go on launch day to buy their consoles they will wonder where is my diablo3? and they will try to get that game if it exists or is in the near future.

Id software mainly has old gamers, One day they will stop playing or move on. Id is not doing anything great to gain new fans to keep them going.

Yeah Epic have been bought out in recent years and are circling the drain as a Game development Studio. Hence the exodus of their top level staff, I'd be very surprised if they ever release something as big as Gears of War again.

Blizzard are now owned by Vivendi along with Activision so expect to see them milking every property they have until they've been completely guitar hero'd. Hell they've already destroyed everyone's faith in the Diablo franchise, sure Diablo 3 sold well but as someone who bought D3, they wont be seeing any more of my cash until their new found love of crappy business practices is gone for good.

Valve and Consoles? Oh yeah that was such a roaring success they want to make idiot proofed PCs complete with a gamepad friendly front-end, hooked directly into their store front to directly target console gamers, just so they don't have to release on consoles anymore to get at that audience.

Don't confuse people not talking about id with people forgetting about id, they're very, very different. One of the biggest stories out of last years e3 was John Carmack's hacked together VR headset, and that wasn't even a real product! Whenever the next Doom game is revealed it'll be front page news all over the gaming press, but for the time being most people aren't talking about id because there simply isn't anything to talk about.

And what is your beef with old gamers? The average age of a gamer has been going up with no signs of going back down and I'm pretty sure Nintendo have already proven beyond doubt that there is no reason a great game can't be enjoyed by both young and old (a term I'm using grudgingly lol) gamers. You don't have to change how you make your games to make them more appealing to a younger crowd.

I'd like to see Doom 4 revealed as much as the next guy, the sooner it's revealed the sooner it gets released and the xbox reveal would be a massive platform for it, but I just don't see it happening, especially since we know it had been in development for current gen systems, with a plan to arrive before the next gen systems. Who knows hell they could even be in crunch already to get it on shelves by the end of this year to avoid having to retool the entire game for next gen.

I don't think anyone thinks much about id, outside of those who need to, well and this little group on occasion. You been hanging out with Tim?

Looks like all the new consoles will be much more PC like and apart from the advantages gained from 'writing to the hardware' they should be closer to the PC build, especially the PS4. You could be right about selling to the present pair of consoles but it's hard to believe id did not have a pretty good idea about what the PS4 and Xbox 720 might be, and when they might appear.

I don't think Valve has even produced anything yet for their gamebox prototype, but I would not discount what might be possible with a thing like that. They do have a mighty market they manage rather well.

@barryK

Blizzard has been owned by Vivendi since 1998. So I don't get the point about blizzard all of a sudden milking consoles after like two console generations. I too hated Diablo 3. The next starcraft might be my last game with them.

Why do you think John Carmack is covered all over the news because everyone who works in the gaming news industry knows what id software is/was. Not current gamers. If id software doesn't make a mark this generation 10 years from now nobody but the gaming press will know about it.

Oh it might not have been a success with Valve but did they not try to take a piece of the pie? One of the biggest PC game studio also wants in on the console business this should be sign enough of how important it is in terms of money and fame.

I have no beef with old gamers I am one of them. Yes and the same games can be enjoyed by both old and young gamers. But everyone has a limited amount of money to spend and the audience is also limited. If the average gamer can buy five games a year wouldn't you want your game to be one of those five? Xbox event is just a bigger stage is all that I'm saying. I know id might not be able to show off over there but if they can they should. E3 this year will be filled with console noise, games that are not backed by the Big 3 will have a tough time to come out on top from this noise.

I'm not disagreeing with you Barry I just don't want id software to lose opportunities due to what's been happening internally in the studio coupled with the expectations they have to meet. They are a good studio with technical talents that are way beyond many others. They are also the only game studio that is able to give me fast paced skill based FPS games. Something we have not seen in years now.

@PenGun

I'd rather have Valve succeed with their console than MS or sony. I refuse to pay 60-70 bucks for a game anymore and I'd like to have the option to switch to a keyboard and mouse whenever I want.

I have my doubts if the upcoming console generation is really going to push the gaming industry the way new consoles always did before.

Console gamers seem to be satisfied with what they've got now and the next generation doesn't seem to deliver anything more except for strict DRM.

The only thing i see that is welcome is the vast increase in main memory which will give us more detail.

Carmacks' Megatexture should profit heavily from this.

Rendering performance increase doesn't seem to be as big as expected though:

In fact, if you check the specs (meaning flops) of the respective GPUs, there's not much of an increase from this gen to next gen.

The performance increase from Xbox to Xbox 360 was extraordinary.

The jump from 360 to "720" is rather small.

Same applies to PS3/PS4.

gentleman any products valu/future depends on market penetration reason xbox360 became such a big hit in the second gen is they carried on with what they were doing sony started earlier and gained a reputable market share( which pissed of ninntendo to no end I know but they still do their thing) through brand recognition in the rest of the world (by the rest of the world material scale richness hot water being able to consume meat once or twice a week tv and or computer my addition having enough money to use something that gives you pleasure yet harms you) xbox360 is getting bigger in this country and I am guessing rest of the world because of the best kind of advertisemant the one in which consumer wants to see the product even when the product did not plan it that way also sony has become an expensive product buying original games cost more than finding that shop which bootlegs the lesser known consoles games because the more prevalent consoles games are considered a commercial commodity its all about value when I bought my first psx it took me a month to find a shop to jailbreak it on my ps2 3 months on my ps3 I have not found any yet yet I know of shops that jailbreak xbox360s and gamers preferring 360s over ps3 technical achievements well look at nvidia they are taking steps into console department I dont think they want to showcase their goodwill towards their fellow man with a hand held gaming device if they get positive sales results it would be their stepping stone into serious consumer markets creating a standalone product rather than a component product which they already did but you get the idea anyhow have fun

I like the idea of democracy that way everybody has someone they do not trust :)

since I am in a chatty mood let me elaborate more on xbox setting conflict establish beach head move on to the next target if done properly meaning strong customer support ie keeping your territory you achieve saturation of market rinse repeat the way of the warrior so to speak apple is a good example carved out a niche against the big bad brother became complacent here is the tricky bit instead of improving on what they were doing used their expertise to go low tech so to speak you have movie makers in your hands why dont you make it more kid on the internet cafe level just an idea though
